  • 1 Timothy 4:6-10 + PDF Discussion Guide
This paragraph has application primarily for church leaders. What is that application? Church leaders must: • Warn the brothers about deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons • Have nothing to do with myths • Must themselves be trained in the words of faith and good doctrine. • Toil and strive for the gospel, as God is potentially the Savior of all people. What is the application here for Christian in general? • All believers must beware of irreverent, silly, religious myths (they're all around us!). • Listen to your leaders when they warn of bad doctrine/practice. • Remember that bodily training is of some benefit, but training in godliness is far more valuable. You will not succeed spiritually if you do not adopt spiritual disciplines. Where are your priorities? • Live life in light of eternity. George Whitefield spoke of seeing criminals riding in a cart on their way to the gallows, arguing like a bunch of kids about who should sit on the right hand of the cart. Here were men condemned to die that very day, but their focus was on who got the best seat on the way to the execution! The Bible is clear that as members of the fallen human race, we're all in that cart, on the way to the gallows. We'd better be preparing for what lies beyond. • Toil and strive to effectively introduce the gospel to your children (the next generation). If you drop the ball, it will be a curse to them.

  • Annihilationism
The guys explore the tension between pastoral authenticity and institutional protection, emphasizing the importance of vulnerability in Christian leadership while acknowledging the risks of personal exposure in public ministry. It reflects on the cultural health of a local church marked by humility, accountability, and a non-competitive spirit, contrasting it with the often performative or divisive dynamics found in larger or more prominent congregations. The discussion then turns to the historical figure George Whitefield, highlighting his profound impact during the Great Awakening, his remarkable evangelistic zeal, and the complex legacy of his involvement in slavery, illustrating how even flawed individuals can be instruments of divine purpose. Finally, the guys examine the theological debate over annihilationism versus eternal conscious torment, weighing scriptural arguments, historical precedent, and the moral implications of divine justice, ultimately affirming that the core of the gospel remains the call to repentance and relationship with God, not fear of punishment, and that the ultimate trust in God's righteousness transcends human speculation about the afterlife.

  • Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!
Summary: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (Advent Devo #17) In this penultimate advent devotional for 2025, Pastor Jason Van Bemmel of Forest Hill Presbyterian Church explores the deep theological roots of the classic carol, "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing." Drawing from Colossians 1:15–20, the session breaks down the dual nature of Christ—His cosmic divinity as the Creator and sustainer of the universe, and His humble incarnation as the Savior who reconciles humanity to God through the cross. Key highlights include: • A History of the Hymn: Learn how Charles Wesley's 1739 poem, originally titled "Hark! How All the Welkin Rings," was refined by George Whitefield and eventually paired with Felix Mendelssohn's upbeat melody in 1840 to become the masterpiece we sing today. • Theology in Song: A verse-by-verse look at how the lyrics proclaim Jesus as the "incarnate Deity," the "Sun of Righteousness," and the "Prince of Peace" who brings second birth to all. • Biblical Foundation: An exploration of Christ's preeminence as the "image of the invisible God" and the "firstborn from the dead." Join us for this insightful study as we celebrate the "newborn King" who lays His glory by to bring light and life to the world. #advent2025 #ChristmasTheology #HarkTheHeraldAngelsSing #BibleStudy #ForestHillPres #AdventDevotional #CharlesWesley #ChristianHymns
