"Do not love the world or anything in the world." 1 John 2:15 There are two ways in which a person may attempt to displace the love of the world from the heart: 1. By a demonstration of the world's vanity, so that the heart shall be prevailed upon simply to withdraw its regards from an object that is not worthy of it. "When I surveyed all that I had accomplished and what I had toiled to achieve-everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun!" Ecclesiastes 2:11 "This world is passing away along with its desires!" 1 John 2:17 2. By setting forth another object, even Christ, as more worthy of its attachment, so that the heart shall be prevailed upon to exchange an old affection for a new one. The best way to overcome the world, is not with morality or self-discipline. Christians overcome the world by seeing the beauty and excellence of Christ. They overcome the world by seeing something more attractive than the world-the Lord Jesus Christ! "Yes, He is altogether lovely! This is my Beloved, and this is my Friend!" Song of Songs 5:16

Article 4: The Canonical Books We include in the Holy Scripture the two volumes of the Old and New Testaments. They are canonical books with which there can be no quarrel at all. In the church of God the list is as follows: In the Old Testament, the five books of Moses— Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy; the books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth; the two books of Samuel, and two of Kings; the two books of Chronicles, called Paralipomenon; the first book of Ezra; Nehemiah, Esther, Job; the Psalms of David; the three books of Solomon— Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song; the four major prophets— Isaiah, Jeremiah*, Ezekiel, Daniel; and then the other twelve minor prophets— Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. In the New Testament, the four gospels— Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; the Acts of the Apostles; the fourteen letters of Paul— to the Romans; the two letters to the Corinthians; to the Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians; the two letters to the Thessalonians; the two letters to Timothy; to Titus, Philemon, and to the Hebrews; the seven letters of the other apostles— one of James; two of Peter; three of John; one of Jude; and the Revelation of the apostle John. * "Jeremiah" here includes the Book of Lamentations as well as the Book of Jeremiah. The Conclusion of the Whole Matter Ecclesiastes 12:9-14 "When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?" "The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind." Three thousand years before these songs were written, a famous "Preacher" said, "I have seen the works that are done under the sun, and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind" (1:14). As it has been said, "One thing we learn from history is that man does not learn from history." One thing that Solomon has learned in life "under the sun" is that "all is vanity" (1:2,14;2:11,17;3:19;11:8;12:8). Solomon has used the word "all" over seventy times in Ecclesiastes. There is life with God (the Shepherd,12:11), or there is life without Him "under the sun." A life of purpose, or a life of emptiness, it is all or nothingness (vanity).

The Songs of Ascents are discipleship songs that were sung by Jewish pilgrims on the trip up to Jerusalem for one of the three annual feasts. So it makes sense that some of the Songs would relate to seeking and trusting the Lord in the daily family life. Psalms 127 and 128 are a pair of the Songs that do indeed teach concerning the family. - Since Psalm 126 ended with a call for diligence to work for the Lord while trusting in His sovereignty to bring the results as He sees fit (and promises), it is fitting that Psalm 127's main them is trusting in God and His goodness and sovereignty while living for Him. Solomon--as he teaches in Ecclesiastes--cautions us that if we live and trust in our own skills, labors, and motives all our building and watching will be vanity. But if the Lord builds the house--we labor for Him according to His priorities and will and by His power--there will be blessing and success. - And a wonderful example of this is the blessing and parenting of children. Children are a gift from God, not earned, not able to be built, to be enjoyed and raised up for God and by God's directions and helps. And we trust God for the results. - Introduction ---A.
