Here in verse 12, we find Jesus giving the disciples a very amazing statement that deserves some explanation. He says to them – "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to the Father." What does this statement mean? Well, 1st of all, we must conclude that it was because Jesus was going to the Father that His disciples would be able to do these greater works than He had done. But 2nd, we will need to consider – In what sense would these works that they would do be greater than those that Jesus did? And after we look at these things, I would like us to 3rdly – Think about the importance of our prayers in relation to these greater works that we will do. I want you to see that your motivation in praying and asking for these things will be, as Jesus says – So that the Father will be glorified in the Son. I hope that each of us will see, here in the next few moments, what we are called to, as Christians, which will go far beyond our own conception of what we presently think that we can do for the Lord.

Though He repeatedly pointed to His divine identity—claiming to be the Son of Man, the light of the world, and the one fulfilling Scripture—His audience, hardened by sin and pride, could not perceive Him as the Messiah, leading them to attempt stoning. The sermon explains that God's hardening of Israel was not arbitrary but a consequence of their failure to fulfill their original purpose: to be a light to the nations and a witness to God's salvation. Their spiritual insularity and rejection of the law's true intent rendered them unable to bear the gospel, necessitating a divine pivot to the church—a new people, cleansed by Christ's sacrifice and empowered by the Holy Spirit, now called to fulfill the mission Israel failed. The preacher challenges believers to examine their hearts, asking whether Christ truly fills them, for only a heart transformed by His love will naturally overflow in bold witness and sacrificial service, fulfilling the church's divine commission to proclaim the good news to the world.
