Last Sunday, we looked at verses one through five where John encountered an angel declaring Babylon's pending destruction but also urged believers residing there to escape the city. Babylon, characterized by its unclean, demonic, prideful, and exceedingly sinful nature stands on the brink of judgment. This Sunday, we will see the angel's proclamation switch to a fervent imprecatory prayer to God seeking justice on Babylon. The aftermath of Babylon's destruction produces two contrasting responses: one is lament since the source of wealth and materialism has been destroyed. The other is a call for joy, because of God's retribution to Babylon for the crimes she committed against His people. Those "given to change" are seen, today, in the modern Progressive movement. Change can be good when it is necessary and does not contradict God's word. We have here in these verses God speaking to Job questions which he knows that he dare not answer in the affirmative. And these questions relate to one of the greatest, most fearsome creatures on sea or land, that God ever created; that is, Leviathan. God Himself gives Job this awesome description of this mighty creature. And He does so in order that Job might stand in awe of His handiwork in making Leviathan. But even more, God speaks of Leviathan in order that Job would stand in awe of God Himself who created Leviathan in just this way. God was showing Job that His ways are sometimes very mysterious. They are at many points, past finding out. God was saying to Job – If Leviathan is a creature which you would be afraid of, then how much more should you be afraid of misrepresenting and misunderstanding Me, Job. In the exposition of this chapter, I will be taking things somewhat out of order in the verses. In my 1st point I will be asking the question – What kind of a creature is here being described in these verses? (I will use verses 12-21) 2nd – What is Leviathan's attitude towards people who try to oppose him? (I will use verses 22-34) And then 3rd – How do these verses show forth the truth about God's love for us in Christ, and what He will do for us in regard to Satan? (verses 1-11) May the Lord help us to receive all of the truth which He has for us here in this amazing passage.
