  • When Babies Go to Heaven, Do They Get a Halo, Harp and Wings?
    ### Christians in Heaven ≠ Harp, Halo, Wings **Sunday School Lesson — Pastor Ed Decker** This lesson examines what the Bible teaches about heaven, the resurrection, and the future of believers. Through passages from 1 Corinthians 13, 1 Thessalonians 4:13–17, Matthew 18:3–12, and Mark 12:18, the lesson directs attention away from popular cultural images and toward the testimony of Scripture. First Corinthians 13 contrasts our present, partial understanding with the fuller understanding associated with that which is perfect. First Thessalonians 4 provides the comforting promise of Christ's return, the resurrection of the dead in Christ, and the gathering of believers to be with the Lord. Matthew 18 addresses humility, conversion, the example of little children, and Christ's warning concerning the little ones. Mark 12:18 introduces the Sadducees, who questioned the resurrection, providing an opportunity to consider the biblical teaching concerning life after death. Together, these passages encourage believers to distinguish what Scripture actually says from assumptions that have developed through tradition, artistic representation, and popular imagination. **Central takeaway:** Our understanding of eternity should be grounded in the Word of God. The Christian hope is not founded on harps, halos, or wings, but on the promises of God and the assurance of being with the Lord. **Key Scripture:** 1 Thessalonians 4:17 (KJV) — "and so shall we ever be with the Lord."

  • What We Receive in the Supper (2)
Although ignorant and wicked men receive the outward elements in this sacrament, yet they receive not the thing signified thereby; but by their unworthy coming thereunto are guilty of the body and blood of the Lord, to their own damnation. Wherefore all ignorant and ungodly persons, as they are unfit to enjoy communion with him, so are they unworthy of the Lord's table, and cannot, without great sin against Christ, while they remain such, partake of these holy mysteries, or be admitted thereunto.

  • The receiving of Salvation.
The fifth installment of this series brings us to a desert place, where a man is trying to sit and understand. He has purposed to worship in his mind and his heart, but he has no clue about what he is supposed to do. He has not yet received salvation. Most would have seen him, a wealthy man sitting there reading the bible and would have offered him a Sunday school class to teach, or a small group to lead. But Philip didn't do that, instead he asked him a question. A question that would take this guy from a place of trying to understand what he is reading, to the place of receiving salvation. In our world we have many of the same issues this guy had, we have a lot that have read, but only few that have received. But as we navigate this text we notice a pattern for us to follow. A pattern that will lead us into the place that we might receive real salvation.

  • Worship by Divine Design
This sermon examines Deuteronomy 12 and 13, emphasizing the command for Israel to destroy pagan worship sites and establish centralized worship at the place chosen by the Lord. The central theme is the exclusivity of God's claim on His people, illustrated by the repeated phrase "the Lord your God," which highlights a personal and possessive relationship rather than a distant deity. The text warns against the human tendency to drift into idolatry or follow false prophets, even if they perform signs, by illustrating the severe consequences of turning away from the true God. The preacher connects these Old Testament laws to the New Testament reality of Christ's ultimate sacrifice, noting that the blood of sacrifices foreshadowed the atonement for sin. Ultimately, the message calls for a life of reverent obedience, where believers guard their hearts against sin and rejoice in the grace and holiness of the one true God.
