In 1977 when James Dobson started Focus on the Family, American families were in a great deal of turmoil. Dobson, a Christian psychologist who grew up in the Holiness movement started Focus on the Family to try to help resolve some of the confusion and to strengthen the home. And while he was successful in many ways, the American church began to look to him as more than just a psychologist with much better advice than the world and looked to him as an Evangelical leader. This shift was in many ways not beneficial for either Dobson or the church. In this episode, we want to look at Dr. James Dobson's life and overall influence on the American family and the church. One of the main issues we want to focus on is what happens when the church follows someone whose primary focus is on something other than proclaiming and teaching the Word of God. To do that, it's crucial to understand that every Christian is not called to lead the church. Every Christian who ministers is not required to focus on teaching the church how to understand the Word of God and equipping the saints for the work of the ministry. But the men who lead the church must have as their primary focus how to cause God's word to shine forth and to transform the hearts and minds of those they are ministering to. And it is as much the duty of the church to follow the right men as it is the duty of the leaders to have the right focus. This is one of the main reasons that Dr. Dobson's ministry is a bit of a mixed bag. He fought fiercely against the most visible cultural attacks and pressures that were assaulting American homes such as abortion and the sexual revolution, and he championed a return to Biblic

Many nations are facing increasing pressure to allow physicians to participate in the killing of their patients. Once these deadly practices are legalized, there's always a push for expansion. Returning to Crosstalk to bring an update on this issue was Brad Mattes. Brad is president of Life Issues Institute which was founded in 1991 to serve the educational needs of the pro-life movement. Brad is president of the International Right to Life Federation, a frequent international speaker and lecturer on abortion and related life issues This is a topic that must be followed, not just from a U.S. perspective, but internationally as well. For example, Brad noted how in Canada in 2020 they introduced a bill to remove "Reasonably Foreseeable Death." This has been expanded to include those with serious disabilities or chronic illness even though they're not terminally ill. Now there's pressure to expand this to patients with dementia or mental illness although the outcry appears to have put this off for the time being. However, he indicated they still expect to pass this as people become desensitized to this and opposition dies down. Why do some say we need the option of death with dignity? Where is the pressure coming from for people to pursue euthanasia? When does the right to die become the duty to die? These and other questions are answered, while you'll also hear euthanasia news from Maryland, New York, Delaware, Illinois, and California. Rev. Jim Harden is president and CEO of CompassCare Pregnancy Services in New York. Theirs is one of many centers targeted with criminal activity including firebombs, vandalism and threats. As Jim noted in his opening comments, we call ourselves a civilized society. In spite of that we continue to prey on human life in the womb. He cited Hope Clinic in Chicago, a business that advertised they perform late term abortions up to 34 weeks. Also, while some states are acting to protect life, others are putting unborn children in the crosshairs and declaring open season on them all year long and at all stages of development. Yes, the battle is raging and is, in fact, intensifying as you'll hear as Reverend Harden comments on the following: Recently, Wisconsin's liberal supreme court determined that the state's 1849 law that banned abortion doesn't ban it. They reason that prior to the Dobbs decision, the 1849 law was superseded by newer state laws regulating abortion. An abortionist in South Korea is facing murder charges after allegedly performing an abortion on a 36 week pregnant woman which resulted in the baby being born alive and then left to die unattended. The problem of rogue activist judges who feel it's their duty to enact a form of secular fundamentalism in government policy which then circumvents both the legislative and executive branches. This undermines the rule of law by way of law. In other words, are we seeing a judicial coup in America? Reverend Harden summarized the current battle this way: The enemies of life don't care about women, choice or access to medical care. They only care about abortion and what it gives them.

When marriages begin to break down, husbands and wives often stop fulfilling their family duties. This increases the speed of marital demise. On the other hand, sometimes a couple gets married without ever knowing their biblical responsibilities to one another. Since God created marriage and family, only He is qualified to explain how it is intended to function. In this Bible message, we learn the God-given duties of a Christian husband.

With the way the reactions have gone (12 states are suing the Trump administration) you'd think that tariffs are some sort of new idea that President Trump has concocted. But there's much more to this than you may realize both historically and constitutionally. As William began, he described tariffs as a tax on items imported into America from other nations. Keep in mind that prior to the time of Woodrow Wilson there was no income tax. So for the first 150 years of our nation's history, tariffs were the number one instrument used to finance the federal government. In spite of this history, is there a constitutional basis for tariffs? Yes there is. Article 1, Section 8 authorizes the federal government to collect duties and imposts (tariffs) to help pay the debt, provide for the common defense and the general welfare of the United States. These are just a few of the many attributes of biblical masculinity; an embracing of the responsibility and duties that life will and does demand from you as a man, as well as purposeful, mental, physical, and spiritual preparation for those things ahead of time. A deep-set foundation in his faith and trust in God, and on that, he builds his life, for his family, and for the Lord.
