  • Working Out Our Salvation
May I ask a question, how were you saved? As a good Reformed Calvinist Baptist, you would answer God elected me, even before the foundation of the world, and you would be right. But some of you may have thought, I confessed with mouth that Jesus is Lord, and I believed in my heart that God raised Him from the dead, and Scripture says I will be saved; you are right! Again, I ask, how were you saved? God and you were very much involved in your salvation. Such a question is seen as a divine paradox. Due to our fallen condition, there is a tendency to be either a Pietist or a Quietist. Principle: You are to workout your own salvation. Paul is not saying work AT your salvation. He is not saying WORK UP your salvation. He is not saying work FOR your salvation...

  • 23. Justified Freely By His Grace
Belgic Confession Article 23 We believe that our salvation consists in the remission of our sins for Jesus Christ’s sake, and that therein our righteousness before God is implied; as David and Paul teach us, declaring this to be the blessedness of man that GOD IMPUTES RIGHTEOUSNESS TO HIM APART FROM WORKS. And the same apostle says that we are JUSTIFIED FREELY BY HIS GRACE, THROUGH THE REDEMPTION THAT IS IN CHRIST JESUS. And therefore we always hold fast this foundation, ascribing all the glory to God, humbling ourselves before Him, and acknowledging ourselves to be as we really are, without presuming to trust in any thing in ourselves, or in any merit of ours, relying and resting upon the obedience of Christ crucified alone, which becomes ours when we believe in Him. This is sufficient to cover all our iniquities, and to give us confidence in approaching to God; freeing the conscience of fear, terror, and dread, without following the example of our first father, Adam, who, trembling, attempted to cover himself with fig-leaves. And, verily, if we should appear before God, relying on ourselves or on any other creature, though ever so little, we should, alas! be consumed. And therefore every one must pray with David: O JEHOVAH, ENTER NOT INTO JUDGMENT WITH THY SERVANT: FOR IN THY SIGHT NO MAN LIVING IS RIGHTEOUS.

  • God's Absolute Sovereignty
The Absolute Sovereignty of God is the foundation of Reformed theology. It is the governing reality from which all of the doctrines of grace emerge. The strongest statements of such absolute sovereignty come not from the pen of historic Calvinistic theologians but from the Apostle Paul himself, as in Romans 9. This passage is often erroneously characterized as obscure but Paul's meaning is clear. The text is not hard to understand although, for many, it is hard to accept.

  • GOP Race & Princeton Theology
On the first half of the program today, I will speak with Emily Belz - reporter for WORLD Magazine, about the Super Tuesday results of the GOP Primary Race. On the second half of the program, my guest will be Dr. Joseph Pipa - President, Professor - Historical & Systematic Theology for Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. We will discuss the upcoming Spring Conference 'A Commemoration of Princeton' The webpage for the conference states, 'Praised, maligned, and misunderstood, the effects of Old Princeton Seminary have towered over theological discussion for a century. From the time God raised up this school in 1812 until 1929, the Princeton theologians were the stalwarts of experimental, Calvinistic theology. The founders of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary consciously adopted the Princeton Plan as the foundation of instruction for the seminary'

  • Why Every Calvinist Should Be a Premillennialist, #4
http://www.gty.org/Shop/Audio+Series/300 Now tonight as we continue our study on the future of Israel, I want to begin by reading you a portion of Scripture. Open your Bible, if you will, to the forty-fourth chapter of Isaiah, Isaiah chapter 44 and without a lot of comment on this text from the forty-fourth chapter, I want to read for you a few selected portions which I think will provide a foundation for the things that I want to say to you tonight. While you're turning to that, let me just say that this is the fourth message in a series on the future of Israel. It also is tied in to the wonderful biblical doctrine of sovereign election, God's sovereign election of the nation Israel for a future. That really sums up what we're looking at...

  • Why Every Calvinist Should Be a Premillennialist, #1
http://www.gty.org/Shop/Audio+Series/300 Now I've been telling you for a number of months that we were going to get in to the subject of eschatology, the doctrine of last things. We've been working our way through doctrinal emphases in Scripture, doctrinal themes. And we have covered a lot of ground, but we now come to the doctrines that relate to the end times. And in line with that, I want to try at least in the next couple of Sunday nights to establish a foundation for our understanding. Now talking about eschatology is not without controversy. There are a number of viewpoints of what the Bible means when it speaks of future events. We understand that when you have a prophecy in the Bible that has not yet come to pass, not everything will be clear. In 1 Peter chapter 1 you remember Peter says that the prophets who wrote concerning Christ, concerning the things to come wondered what person and what time. That is to say that while they understood that someone would come, they understood whatever it was that had been revealed to them, the timing was not clear and the precise personages were not clear. We can take prophetic Scripture at face value. We can interpret it the way we interpret any other passage of Scripture with the same use of the normal, natural means of interpreting language. And we should. And it will yield for us as clear an understanding of the future as the Lord wants us to have. It's not nearly as difficult as some people make it if you just take Scripture at face value. Now to affix our thinking to one great future event which seems to be the most controversial...

  • The Politician
These verses introduce the Syrian ruler who, without doubt, is in Scripture a type of the antichrist who is to appear in the New Testament age. He is a ruler of intrigues--a master politican. His name is Antiochus Epiphanes. This sermon develops from the text his deceitful character and his rise to power. Sadly, mirrors of Antoichus are very much present with us in America today. We can win as a nation only by returning to the Calvinistic foundations of Puritan New England.
