Why is it so important to understand the narrative of Scripture? In this sermon on Genesis 3:1 titled "The Message of the Bible," Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones preaches on the great story of the Bible by looking at the fall of humanity into sin, and the death of Jesus—the only remedy of sin. The state of the world can only be accounted for in the story of the fall. When humanity sinned against God, the whole world fell into sin, and they became slaves of the devil. No other story can account for the sin and evil that is in the world. Only the word of God tells why the world is in the terrible state that it is, and God's word alone gives the answer to all the world's problems. The glorious truth of Scripture is that God has sent His only Son to overcome sin, Satan, and the fall. Jesus is the new man who has come to redeem the whole world. This is the story of the world: humanity sinned against God, but God has sent Jesus to make all things new. This sermon confronts all with the truth of God's salvation in Christ and the need to repent.

The sermon centers on the reality and active opposition of Satan, not as a myth but as a real, strategic adversary who seeks to divide, discourage, deaden spiritual appetite, and distract believers from their mission. Drawing from 2 Corinthians 2:11, it emphasizes that while Christ has already triumphed over evil, believers must remain vigilant against Satan's devices—such as exploiting unresolved bitterness, fostering despair in trials, dulling spiritual hunger through complacency, and diverting focus through petty disputes. The remedy lies in humility, forgiveness, reliance on Christ's grace, and returning to the ordinary means of grace, especially prayer, Scripture, and fellowship. The message calls both believers and unbelievers to repentance: Christians are urged to guard their hearts and recommit to Christ's mission, while non-believers are warned that Satan's chief deception is to blind them to the gospel, and they must turn to Christ alone for salvation, which only God can grant through regeneration.

The Bible League meeting. --- This sermon presents a sober yet hopeful examination of Satan's relentless warfare against the Church, emphasizing that the Church's very existence—purchased by Christ's blood—is the reason for the enemy's hostility. It warns that Satan attacks through false doctrine, internal division, pride, careless speech, tolerated sin, and spiritual discouragement, exploiting subtle distortions of truth, fractured relationships, and hidden worldly compromises. The remedy, however, is not human effort but the sovereign grace of God through the faithful preaching of the whole counsel of Scripture, prayerful holiness, humble love, and the unshakable security found in Christ's finished work. The Church is preserved not by perfection but by the power of Christ's grace, which builds believers up, sanctifies them, and ensures their eternal safety, calling all—leaders, members, and the unconverted—to repent, persevere, and rest in the Lord alone.
