Matthew 25:1-13

The Holy Spirit preserved Hannah's response to God's grace in her life. Her song serves as a wonderful meditation on God's character and work. She sees more here than just God's favor on one insignificant woman in Israel. From God's character and His mercy on Israel, she rightly sees that God is at work to bring about undeserved rescue for Israel through a king. This sermon calls us to rest in the king that God provides for the rescue of His people from their enemies. Jesus Christ is the Son of David who rescues us from our sin and the punishment of our sin through faith in Him.

The book of Samuel opens with the distress of a woman. We never got to hear the name of Samson's mother or the greatness of her distress at Samson's capture and death. But the story of David begins with God listening to the prayer of Hannah. The story of God's anointed king who mediates for His people begins with a woman who cannot have a child. God remembers, He hears and acts, not only for her in her plight but to bring about the fulfillment of the good news given in the Garden of a son who would crush the enemy. This sermon calls us to trust in Jesus Christ who reveals the mercy of God to us.

Do you see the glorious flow and connection in Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, His cleansing the Temple and cursing the fig tree as wonderful revelation and acts of the King pronouncing His coming judgment of Israel and demonstrating His power to carry it out? Behold your King!

The anticipated Second Coming of Christ signifies the inauguration of His promised one-thousand-year reign on earth, where peace, righteousness, and joy will fill the world. All evil will be snuffed out. But before such a kingdom comes, Christ will come and vanquish all His enemies who have opposed Him and His truth. This Sunday, we will look at the last three features about Jesus's Second Coming that you should know about and how it should shape the way we live today.
