Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Matthew, one of the 12 apostles, and one of the 4 evangelists of the Gospel. The scripture tells us that St. Matthew was a tax collector. Tax collectors weren't just notorious for issuing the tax but also for raising it so they could keep a percentage. Why would Jesus pick someone like Matthew to be one of His apostles?
