In today’s Old Testament and Gospel lessons, we hear of the opposition the world has to God’s Word and those who proclaim it. Yet, God’s presence in His Word and with those who proclaim it bring encouragement to the church. In the Epistle lesson, Paul encourages Christians to offer ourselves in service to God, not to sin, ending with the well-known verse, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
