“Never Let Me Go,” is from a true master – Kazuo Ishiguro, the Nobel laureate who says that he won the prize because he knows how to make people cry. And this book excels at it, as it “guides,” and I use this word precisely because there is no manipulation or melodrama. Still, we are emotionally invested in our characters. A subtle horror – a dystopian novel set in late 1990s England. A subclass of humans – clones -- live and exist among us and in a span of their short adolescent lives, they donate their body parts in an act of obedient altruism.

The author captures the grungy unspoiled Mexico City before NAFTA, while reflecting on a nostalgic past. And there is a lot of nostalgia in this book, dark nostalgia – from the love of early Mexican horror movies to 80s Hollywood slasher films. There’s a deep affection for celluloid dreams, down to the blade hitting the bone.
