SMC Pod #35: The MISSION IMPOSSIBLE series (through FALLOUT) & the mystery of Tom Cruise

The Secret Movie Club Team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Craig Hammill, Daniel Ott) discuss their love for the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE movie series (currently in 2020 at 6 movies), the mystery that is Tom Cruise, and (at the very end) the results of the election. Craig makes a plea for each side to work to understand the other if we're going to get anything done. 

The Secret Movie Club Team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Craig Hammill, Daniel Ott) discuss the horror genre as a whole, name favorite deep dive horror movies, dig into what makes horror so endlessly fascinating. And Edwin hypothesizes that Jason Vorhees, the hockey mask wearing killer of the FRIDAY THE 13th series, may be the good guy, and all the sex crazed teenagers who keep invading his woods may be the bad guys. 

A mysterious file arrives at Secret Movie Club labeled only "MD_HH_30.flac". We decide to play it for Halloween instead of our regularly scheduled program. It turns out to have four spooky, scary, strange tales just in time for All Hallows Eve: "The Wheel", "The Sleeping Mariner", "Sea Fog", and "Night at the Club". 

Special Guest Celeste Menchaca (https://kiddetectivesrpg.com/) and the Secret Movie Club team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Craig Hammill, Daniel Ott) discuss the 1984 original GHOSTBUSTERS as well as the supposed "family" movies of their youth that scared the heck out of them and introduced them to horror. Craig also tries to translate Edwin's obscenity laden refusal in Spanish to talk about Day of the Dead. 

Robert Eggers enthusiast/special guest Brian Robert (@brirob9) and the  Secret Movie Club team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Craig Hammill, Daniel Ott) discuss Jordan Peele's horror comedy satire masterpiece GET OUT and other great horror gems of the 2010's. Craig yet again talks about the importance of voting. 

Special Guest pop culture writer Kaitlyn Reilly (@reillytweets) joins the Secret Movie Club team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Craig Hammill, Daniel Ott) to discuss Stephen King movie & tv adaptations. Writer King has dominated much of popular culture both in horror and other genres for the last 40+ years. We discuss some of our favorite King adaptations. Why King has always been deeply ambivalent about Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of THE SHINING. And how King has transcended the pop/literary divide.

Edwin curses Craig for breaking Edwin's horror streak. 

Special Guest, stand up comedian Jay Light (@DietJay), joins the Secret Movie Club team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Craig Hammill) to discuss blockbuster director Michael Bay with a specific focus on ARMAGEDDON.  Everyone has different feelings and takes on Bay. Edwin vehemently defends the Bayhem while startlingly admitting he hates PEARL HARBOR and the TRANSFORMERS movie with a passion. Much is discussed. And the importance of voting this year is again brought up.

Sonder Valley is rattled by the unexplained spontaneous flattening of a nearby forest and the disappearance of the locally elected Mayor. The only available detective in the area, Annalise, rallies up an eccentric task force to find the 'beloved' government official and attempt to find a satisfying answer to their forest predicament.

Everyone surprisingly agrees that THE LAST JEDI was the strongest of the sequels (and prepares for blowback). Star Wars and the current state of the industry also get discussed. And Edwin registers to vote!
