Oh yeah…see that “Part 1” in the subject line? Not “Part 1 of 20”, lest you are concerned. Just a couple too many ideas to fit into one Talky Bit.
More to the point – as much as it’s a thing these days to be “spiritual but not religious”, religion and spirituality do have a long-standing relationship. We could probably reasonably call that relationship complicated, but it’s hard to deny that it’s real. For some of us, separating those pieces from one another is a long-standing project. For others, it’s simple – just reject religion and go from there. And, of course, there’s all the uneven ground in between. In this (short) series, I want to “circle the elephant” a bit and take a look at religion(s) from several points of view. As you might expect, some of the emphasis will be on common ground. Some of it will be on distinctives, but from the vantage point of “where did these come from?” rather than “who is right?”. Our mission is to gain a view of religions that has more dimensions than the one(s) we might already be familiar with, in the interest of seeing religion, its place in the world, and its relationship with spirituality with fresh eyes.
We’ll gather on Sunday here at 10:45 a.m. for music and Community Time, followed by the Talky Bit. There will not be an And Lunch After (I’ll be in Saskatoon, enjoying lunch with my mom) this week, but the mid-week Zoom hangout is on.
Next week – an in-person gathering at a public venue!! First time in….well, let’s not dwell on that. Better to celebrate the “next”, and carry on. I’ll say a bit more about that in the Talky Bit, and send around the actual info in the blurb next week.
Enjoy the warmer weather, and I’ll see you on Sunday!
Peace,
Tim Plett
