Seeing Religion(s) in 3D – Part Almost Last: The Problem of Christian Exclusivism

Listen Later

Hey all…if this seems a bit too “heady” for summer, just remember that you can always come back and listen to the podcast on some rainy, chilly fall evening. Maybe it’ll feel just right for that. But just in case you’re planning to drop in on Sunday, here’s where I’ll be headed.  We’ve touched on the downside of the absolutization of beliefs in the last couple of Talky Bits (Did I already mention the podcasts? They’re a great way to catch up if you’ve missed anything), but we haven’t focused in on the tradition that most of us are most familiar with – Christianity. This week, I’ll zoom in a bit and consider a couple of reasons why Christian exclusivism is a problem, even from within the tradition.

On this matter, I want to be very clear about something I value highly in our context at The Table. This is not a community that assumes we would all identify as “Christian”. In fact, it’s no secret that many of us don’t. And yet, everyone belongs, and not in some hierarchical way that says, “All are welcome…as long as you don’t expect to have any responsibility or influence”. My choice to dig deeper into Christian exclusivism as a “talky-bit-worthy” topic is a reflection of the fact that most of us know that tradition best, and many of us are actively trying to figure out what to do with the teachings we have been handed in that context. For lots of us, those teachings included strongly exclusivist doctrines. All to say, I think this is worthy of some direct exploration, and we’ll do a bit of that on Sunday.

We’ll be meeting online here this week, starting at 10:45 a.m. for music and Community Time, followed by the Talky Bit. There will be “And Lunch After” this week (URL at the bottom of this email), but not a mid-week Zoom hangout. In fact, that event (the mid-week one) will not happen again for the balance of June and July, at which point we’ll evaluate its place in the mix as part of the plan to move back into weekly in-person gatherings in August.

Next week will be an in-person gathering at the Bourkevale Community Centre. As was the case for our last in-person get together (at Mcbeth House Centre, which our youngsters promptly concluded was haunted, despite having no concrete evidence of this claim), there WILL be Kids Table programming. A big “THANK YOU!” shout out to Amy for taking both of those for the month of June.

That’s all for now. I’ll see you on Sunday!
