Episode 1: Start Before You’re Ready
In this first episode of Self-Employment Sidekick, I’m talking about what it means to begin before everything feels polished, professional, or ready.
I share how perfectionism nearly kept me from launching the podcast, how a simple cover-art task turned into an unnecessary website redesign, and why “side quests” can become a way to avoid the work that actually moves a business forward.
I also look back at my path into self-employment, from taking on a small church website project to landing a $3,500 monthly retainer that helped make the transition possible. Along the way, I’ve learned that business growth rarely happens alone. Referrals, coaching, encouragement, and relationships have shaped my work just as much as individual effort.
The central idea is simple: there’s no perfect starting line. The next step is the one that matters. Identify it, put it on the calendar, take action, and keep moving, even when the result is messy.

Self-Employment Sidekick is a podcast for aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs, freelancers, and solopreneurs who are starting a business or growing a side gig into a central gig that…
I'm Dave Steininger. I went from managing a university website and freelancing on nights and weekends to running my own web design, marketing, and coaching business full time. On this show, I share lessons from my own self-employment journey, answer your questions about starting and growing a business, and occasionally bring on guests to share their stories and expertise.
Every episode ends with one thing to do and one thing to think about, so you leave with something you can use.
New episodes twice a month. Questions, ideas, or something you're stuck on? Send them in at selfemploymentsidekick.com. I read and respond to every message.
Self-employment isn't by-yourself employment.
