  • 069: Luke Bowen, Co-Founder of Evil Genius Beer Company
Episode 069 with Luke Bowen of Evil Genius
This is a special COVID-19 Strategy episode with Luke Bowen, the Co-Founder of Evil Genius Beer Company (http://evilgeniusbeer.com/). Evil Genius is one of the top 250 breweries by volume in the US, with distribution in PA, DE, NJ, MA, MD, CT, and RI.

Luke is also a Founding Partner of Bowen Hayward Group, LLC – an investment vehicle with holdings in various Commercial Real Estate and Food & Beverage Companies. Luke has Co-Authored Academic Papers which have been published Internationally on Advertising Strategy, Market Research Best Practices, and Corporate Social Responsibility.

In 2019, the Philadelphia Business Journal named Luke one of Philadelphia’s 40under40.

Luke was kind enough to discuss Evil Genius Beer Company's strategies during our current Stay-at-Home status.  Luke's business is facing uncertainty, just like everyone else, but his positivity and strategies used to keep his team focused have helped him thus far and will likely help Evil Genius to get back up to speed quickly.  Listen in to hear about Luke's approach to dealing with COVID-19.
    On this episode we discussed:

    * Best practices to market your business (from idea to being in the 95th percentile in your space –
    just like Evil Genius)
    * How to use your time at home to improve your branding
    * The strategies Evil Genius used to stay afloat during our uncertain times
    * How "bootstrapping" Evil Genius positioned the beer company to survive the uncertainties created by the COVID-19 Pandemic
    * And so much more!

  • 068: "Dino" Don Lessem, CEO of Dino Don, Inc.
Episode 068 of the Self Made Strategies Podcast, with "Dino" Don Lessem, CEO of Dino Don, Inc.

Dino Don Lessem is a dinosaur explorer, Genghis Khan expert, and CEO and Founder of Dino Don, Inc. He was also a Jurassic Park and Disney movie, and theme park consultant.  Don has also re-created many of the world’s largest dinosaurs.  Additionally, Don is a designer of blockbuster international exhibitions and theme park attractions.  He has also been a TV show host and a commentator for the Today Show, Good Morning America, and CBS Morning News.  Don is also an author of more than 50 books for children and adults.  No wonder, "Dino" Don was recently featured in an Inc.com article entitled "How a Former Journalist Turned His Love of Dinosaurs Into a $5 Million Robotics Business."  Yes, you read that correctly.

Dino is a dynamic speaker and was an extremely entertaining guest on our podcast.  It was a huge pleasure to "sit down" (we recorded this remotely because of COVID-19) with Dino to hear his stories about his adventurous career filled with dinosaurs, and entrepreneurial dynamism and perseverance.

Here is what we talked about on this episode:

    • How to control your idea
    • Why you need to keep doing the same thing over and over
    • Dino's ratio for a successful but also enjoyable entrepreneurial venture (1/3 making money; 1/3 having projects or ideas in development; and, 1/3 "big dream" ideas)
    • Why you need to know what you are passionate about
    • That you need to "know" it is going to work
    • Don't take rejection personally
    • How to find what will keep you persisting
    • Why you should be putting together a team of people who are the best experts you can find (passion comes with that)
    • The problems most entrepreneurs face as their business grows and how to fix that
    • Why you should also consider hiring the youngest/most inexperienced people
    • How to build fearlessness in others
    • Why you need to find your opposites (hint: they will help fill your gaps, and cover your strengths)
    • Why you should start at the top and work your way down (not the other way around)
    • Dino's thoughts on "luck" (1/2 of it is getting a lucky break, the other 1/2 is knowing what to do with it)
    • How to sense an opportunity, and then execute on that opportunity

  • 066: Chef Michael Peacock, The Flying Pie Guy
Welcome to Episode 066, with Chef Michael Peacock, Founder of The Flying Pie Guy

    About Michael:
As a child growing up in Australia and New Zealand, Chef Michael Peacock loved when Friday’s would come around and lucky boys and girls would be able to order fresh, hot pies from their local tuck shop. Hot pies would be delivered to school just before lunch time. The classrooms would be filled with excitement as the aroma of freshly baked pies spread throughout the school.

In the early 1980’s, Mike and his family immigrated to America. New Jersey to be exact. Much to Mike’s surprise, his beloved meat pies were nowhere to be found. Mike would watch his Mum and Dad make meals for his family and loved when they would make pastry filled delights like pies and pasties. Mike grew fond of cooking and soon started cooking on his own. As a teen, Mike would work in restaurants and beg for the Chefs to teach him more about the Culinary Arts, quickly developing a natural love for cooking.

Mike chose a different career path as he started a family of his own but continued to develop his cooking skills. In 2015, Mike made the decision to leave his corporate job and to pursue a new career, one he was passionate about and The Flying Pie Guy was born!

Mike’s dream is to make authentic savory pies, with roots from New Zealand and Australia, available to everyone in America and beyond. He carefully developed his Mum and Dads recipes as well as his own to make them appealing to people of all ages and nationalities. He knew it was important that his signature pastry paired perfectly with his flavor packed fillings and that each gourmet pie was made using all-natural ingredients.

Mike launched his new company in June of 2016. He chose to launch starting with a Food Truck. Timing was perfect as the Food Truck craze was in full swing. Chef Mike thought a Food Truck would be a perfect way to cover large areas, serve all kinds of customers and test which recipes are liked more than others. Chefs Mikes’ savory pies have won awards and been highlighted by numerous media outlets. Mike’s Food Truck was ranked one of the best in New Jersey during 2019 by Peter Genovese, a successful author and food and lifestyle writer for NJ.com. Mike travels throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania, selling his natural, savory and delicious pies to all his happy customers.

Very soon, Chef Mike will launch his e-commerce shop, as he realizes his dreams of making his gourmet pies available to everyone who wants to enjoy them. Mike’s ready-to-bake, Down Under style pies and other goodies, will be available through his online portal, and shipped across America.
Here is what we discussed on this episode:

    * Chef Michael's journey: leaving a corporate gig to follow his passion
    * How Chef Michael maintains the highest level of quality control
    * Chef Michael's approach to customer service
    * How Chef Michael found mentors to help him succeed, along with the best advice he has received so far
    * Chef Michael's upcoming appearance on the "Wolf Pack" streaming show
    * And so much more!

  • 065: SPECIAL COVID-19 RELEASE – Aaron Beverly, the 2019 Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking
Welcome to this Special Release Episode of the Self Made Strategies Podcast

Please read the special message, from Tony Lopes, inspired by Aaron Beverly.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has caused significant stress, but maybe it also presents an opportunity for those of us fortunate enough to have our health.  In our entire human history, there has never been a better opportunity to develop your personal brand and further develop your online presence through storytelling.  Most people are stuck inside, at home, ransacking the internet for entertaining, educational, and positive content.  So who would be better to teach you, to “Speak and Be You,” than the 2019 Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking, Aaron Beverly.

You may remember Aaron, who was our guest in the good ol’ days, ya know…August of 2019.  He sat down with us again (remotely of course) to give us all of his strategies for public speaking success.

Aaron delivered an incredible and entertaining speech, “An Unbelievable Story,” which you will hear on this episode.  You can also watch this episode on our brand NEW YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOG-mybCfvYWhoXo4vPoB5g), or on Aaron’s own YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHVNLGTZBrLiyVcLYqYyETQ).  Don’t forget to hit SUBSCRIBE when you visit both!

Aaron was 30 years old when he took the stage to make his second attempt (he finished 2nd in 2016) at the Toastmasters World Championship.  Aaron, a JP Morgan project manager by day, kept the promise he made on Episode 025 of the Self Made Strategies Podcast when he took home the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking in August of 2019.

In his winning speech Aaron highlights the importance of “acceptance despite difference,” a timely lesson in our post-COVID-19-quarantine world.  Only father time will tell where we will be by Summer of 2020, but hopefully Aaron’s message will spread faster than the virus causing the hysteria and people will focus on “acceptance despite difference.”

Let’s remember that at the end of the day, we are all humans, with loved ones of our own.  Let’s treat each other with dignity, respect, and compassion.
    About Aaron Beverly
Aaron is developing a brand new YouTube channel to continue teaching others the benefits of becoming a strong public speaker.  In August 2016, before becoming the World Champion of Public Speaking, Aaron Beverly became the 1st runner up in the prestigious Toastmasters International World Championship of Public Speaking competing against over 30,000 competitors across the globe.

  • 064: Sarah Ford, Founder of Ranch Road Boots
Welcome to Episode 064, with Sarah Ford Founder of Ranch Road Boots

    About Sarah Ford:
Sarah Ford learned the meaning of hard work when her father hired her to be the janitor for his office at just 10 years old! She didn't bristle at the work - instead, she expanded the business and ran a janitorial company, cleaning the bathrooms & offices for most of the tenants in the building until she was 17.
Instilled with fortitude and commitment to work at such a young age, Sarah has never taken the easy path in life. A Marine Corps Veteran, she's served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.
She then went on to Harvard Business School. She says she learned more on the battlefield than at HBS.
She founded Ranch Road Boots in 2012 with $60K she had saved from her previous jobs. Her boots were inspired by her grandfather, "Daddy Tom," of San Angelo, TX. Her mission is to create leather goods with style & quality that can last forever.
She also gives back to the Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund with every pair sold.
She waited until after becoming an entrepreneur to have her two daughters - she says if she could do it all over again, she would have had her children at a much younger age! She explained it to me like this: “Your life and career don’t get less complicated with time, and you can’t put it off until you retire when things slow down!”
She's incredibly unique and offers an amazing perspective about various aspects of life, business and entrepreneurship.

Here is what we discussed on this episode:

    * How Sarah began her entrepreneurial journey (at a very young age)
    * Why Sarah chose to go to Harvard Business School, after serving two military tours in the Marines
    * What experiences from her youth inspired her to create a brand focused on quality
    * The reason Sarah and Ranch Road Boots donate to the Injured Marines Sempre Fi Fund
