The "Epstein bill" (formally known as the Jeffrey Epstein Files Transparency Act) caused a wedge between House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune primarily over disagreements on whether the bill needed amendments to protect victims and how quickly it should be advanced.  Speaker Johnson argued that the bill had "serious deficiencies" and needed amendments to include stronger protections for the identities of victims and whistleblowers, as well as to prevent the release of non-credible allegations or child sexual abuse material.
