The controversy arose after the six Democratic members of Congress, all with military or intelligence backgrounds, released a video reminding service members of their right to refuse illegal orders. Trump reacted with several posts on social media, writing that the lawmakers should be arrested and tried for "seditious behavior," a crime he stated was "punishable by DEATH!". He also reposted a message that read, "HANG THEM, GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!".
