  • Spiritual Sonic Systems with Maguette Dieng x Lynnée Denise

Spiritual Sonic Systems with Maguette Dieng x Lynnée Denise

Marres x DAR Cultural Agency X RAW Material Company

A dialogue sharing frequencies, sounding hope, and calling attention to the unification of rhythmic elevation.

In this exchange, DJs Lynnée Denise and Maguette Dieng think through songs that integrate ancestral and future-facing cultural practices. From prayer rooms to the dance floor, a sophisticated system of knowing is revealed through improvisational rituals and unspeakable languages. Drawing on the role of circles, circulations, and circular ways of knowing, the music reminds its listeners that there is constant movement activated by DJs and selectors throughout the African Diaspora. This reshaping of ancient rhythms gives us new tools to understand secret codes. This experimental session invites the audience to engage with sonic legacies that re-emerge and are echoed through genre as survival strategies.

Marres organized this project in collaboration with DAR, a cultural agency and platform that represents emerging talents in art, design, and architecture.

Maguette Dieng is a DJ, music producer, educator, and music programmer. She is also a dedicated explorer of music and sound. She co-founded the Jokkoo Collective and is part of FOC, a self-managed cultural space where she creates artistic and sonic experiences rooted in community, purpose, and healing. Through her personal work, Maguette attempts to translate the emotions and experiences of everyday life into sound in poetic, sensitive, and critical ways.

Lynnée Denise is an interdisciplinary writer and global practitioner of sound, language, and Black Atlantic thought. She is a doctoral student in the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research explores how sound system culture creates a living archive for the Black queer diaspora. Her work traces the migrations of music and the role of Black electronic traditions in the African diaspora.

  • Marres Special: Gestures as Portals

In the run-up to a new exhibition at Marres, House for Contemporary Culture in Maastricht, director Valentijn Byvanck interviews participating artists, performers and curators. In this episode he sits down with choreographer and dancer Amparo González Sola during her research and ongoing performance Gestures as Portals.

Gestures are central to González Sola’s practice. She approaches them as portals to memory and connectors between bodies, shaped by context, inherited through generations, and always relational. During her time at Marres, she and co-performer Leandro de Souza worked with the gestures found in the rooms: those of the performers, the visitors, the workers, and traces from the former exhibition Vultures & Fireflies by Mexican artist Alejandro Galván.

  • Marres Special: "Vultures & Fireflies" with co-curator Tonatiuh López

In the run-up to a new exhibition at Marres, House for Contemporary Culture in Maastricht, director Valentijn Byvanck interviews participating artists, performers and curators.

For the exhibition ‘Vultures & Fireflies’ by Mexican artist Alejandro Galván, he sits down with co-curator Tonatiuh López. Among others, they are a freelance curator, writer, researcher, and member of the Ecatepec Contemporary Art Museum (MArCE) and Circo Crico collectives.

Vultures & Fireflies is a Divina Commedia of the raw existence in the Mexican city of Nezahualcóyotl, brought to life through paintings, transfer prints, sculptures, and film. In this powerful chronicle of Mexico, Galván merges elements from tabloid news, comic books, heavy metal, and folklore. His work appears to restore balance in a world marked by injustice and corruption—what Galván calls a vivid dream of Mexican society. A book of the same name was published alongside the exhibition.

Vultures & Fireflies is on view until 31 August 2025 at Marres, Maastricht.

  • Marres Special: "Opaque Spirits" interview with Arturo Kameya and Claudia Martínez Garay

In the run-up to a new exhibition at Marres, House for Contemporary Culture in Maastricht, director Valentijn Byvanck interviews participating artists, performers and curators.

For the exhibition ‘Opaque Spirits’ he sits down with Peruvian artists Arturo Kameya and Claudia Martínez Garay.

Arturo Kameya has transformed Marres into a hotel where the ghosts of the failed Peruvian state have taken up residence. The building’s facade will feature massive paintings showing contemporary Messianic imagery. Inside, visitors can find various scenes, such as a tiled bathhouse that functions as a restaurant, a multi-armed beer fountain, and a large upstairs room with mechanical fish. The hotel’s interior is an allegory of the Peruvian state, reflecting a world of appearances in which truth is less important than what is evoked out of sheer necessity.

‘Opaque Spirits’ opens on March 7th and runs to May 26th 2024 at Marres in Maastricht.
