Supervisory Correctional Systems Specialist (SCSS) Marc Fischer was working at USP Atwater when his life was tragically cut short. There's much to be said about this one that cannot currently be said, as the case is ongoing. But let it be known: a veteran, a husband, a father was in the process of assisting staff under his supervision when he was taken from us. He wasn't in his office, he wasn't in a meeting. He was boots-on-the-ground with his staff. That says a lot about him.

Lieutenant Albarati of MDC Guaynabo Puerto Rico did his job and did it well. In fact, he did it so well that inmates there conspired - with outside help - to permanently put an end to his efforts to combat the interdiction of contraband at the institution.

On February 25, 2013, 34-year-old Senior Officer Specialist Eric J. Williams was working a routine evening shift at the high-security federal prison, USP Canaan. Armed with only a set of keys, handcuffs, and a radio, he was completely alone in a housing unit supervising approximately 130 inmates. In this episode we read the words and try to understand what happened to this young man on his final day as a Correctional Officer in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a day that sparked a nationwide battle for officer safety.

Today’s episode is about the life and ultimate sacrifice of 22-year-old Correctional Officer Jose V. Rivera, a Navy veteran who was tragically killed by two inmates at USP Atwater on June 20, 2008. Relying strictly on the official history preserved by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, we recount the fateful afternoon headcount that resulted in the very first staff murder in the history of the facility.

The sequence of events that transformed the orderly operation of then USP Marion started with the murder of Officer Clutts and ended with the death of Officer Hoffman, who was murdered in chillingly similar fashion to his coworker, murdered only hours before.
