Some district offices in Seoul plan to designate streets near colleges as nonsmoking zones. Smoking will be prohibited on a 250-meter main pedestrian street in front of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies， eastern Seoul， from next year， a Dongdaemun-gu Office official said. This is the first time that a smoking ban has been imposed on university streets.

2003년， 서울 동부 성신여대 앞 250미터 보도가 금연구역으로 지정됐지만 법적 구속력은 없었다. 한국외대 앞 금연조치는 3개월의 유예기간을 거쳐 1월에 시행될 예정이다. 위반자는 벌금 10만원을 내야 한다. 동대문구청은 지난 주 여론조사를 실시해 번화가가 금연조치가 실시되야 하는 지 여부를 지역 주민 3，500명에게 물었다. 응답자의 75%가 금연조치에 찬성했다
