  • Chronicles Q&A #10

Get your questions in for Mina and Nicky for the Serie A Chronicles Q&A show. Each week we answer your questions tweeted to us at @serieAchronpod using the hashtag #ChroniclesQandA.

    This week's questions:

Does the loss of Osimhen remove Napoli from the title race or does it just bring Inter more into it? Can Milan hang on over the duration?

    -Andy Heppel (Manchester)

Considering that Milan, Napoli and Inter seem like they will be the top 3 this season, how big would the consequences be financially for Juve, if they don't finish top 4? Would they be forced to sell the likes of Locatelli and Chiesa?

    -Vivek

What would your starting 11 be for Italy’s World Cup qualifier play-off matches? I’m hoping Spinazzola is back for the play-offs, playing next to Bonucci, Chiellini, and maybe Bastoni. In midfield, I’d go with Pellegrini, Verratti and Barella. Up front, Zaniolo, Chiesa and Immobile.

    -Jeffrey Garofalo (Brooklyn, New York)

  • A Bonkers Serie A Weekend... and Dušan Vlahović

It was an amazing weekend of Serie A action with some exciting games. First losses for the top 2, including a Dušan Vlahović-inspired Fiorentina win over Milan. Then we saw Leonardo Bonucci's penalty prowess in Juventus' away win at Lazio, and Inter's toppling of top-of-the-pops Napoli to claw back some ground on the front-runners in another high scoring and entertaining affair.

Elsewhere, Atalanta took the points in a 7-goal fun-fest against Spezia, and Jose Mourinho unearthed a gem for Roma when 18 year old Ghanaian Felix Afena-Gyan came on as a late substitute to score a spectacular double to take three points from Genoa... but what does that mean for Nicolò Zaniolo who was benched for the full match after reports of a training ground disagreement with the Special One mid-week?

    03:10 Inter v Napoli

    19:00 Fiorentina v Milan

    34:50 Lazio v Juve

46:34 Genoa v Roma... and a summary of the rest

  • Chronicles Q&A #9

Get your questions in for Mina and Nicky for the Serie A Chronicles Q&A show. Each week we answer your questions tweeted to us at @serieAchronpod using the hashtag #ChroniclesQandA.

    This week's questions:

Would a world cup every 3 years be a fair compromise for those wanting it every two years?

    -Daniel Rodriguez (Waterford, Connecticut)

In 2010 we saw one of the biggest World Cup snubs ever when Maradona left both Zanetti & Cambiasso off the Argentina side after each of them having one of their best seasons in their career coming off a treble win. What are some other massive Serie A World Cup snubs?

    -Inter Dave (Hamilton, Canada)

@serieAchronpod: Dumb question, Nicky and Mina. Can you explain some of the positional names specific to calcio? I hear regista, mezz'ala, trequartista etc. Are these positions unique to Italy or are they Italian translations for universal football positions? Thanks! Love the pod!

  • Italy Taking the Scenic Route to the World Cup

The Euro 2020 honeymoon... and Italy's sensational summer of sport... is well and truly over as Roberto Mancini's men failed to qualify directly for the 2022 World Cup. Draws with Switzerland and Northern Ireland saw the Swiss qualify as group winners, leaving Gli Azzurri needing the dreaded play-off pathway in March to get to Qatar.

Nicky and Mina break it down for us. What are the problems? What about Jorginho's penalty woes? What are Mancini's options? Where will the goals come from in the play-offs? What has happened to the element of surprise that they had at the Euros?

Plus... Poetry chaos, and the Christmas run-in report card. Which managers will get to eat their panettone?

And stick in to the end as we end with a good World Cup Qualification play-off memory featuring one Pierluigi Casiraghi (can he make a comeback???), coincidentally also from November 15th, all the way back in 1997.

    00:00 Italy's road to Qatar

    29:40 Mina's limerick

    33:20 The Serie A Christmas run-in

Get your questions in for Mina and Nicky for the Serie A Chronicles Q&A show. Each week we answer your questions tweeted to us at @serieAchronpod using the hashtag #ChroniclesQandA.

    This week's questions:

What would you propose as the best in-house solution for the Juve midfield? McKennie has knocked in a few goals lately but results haven’t exactly been positive. Is there any hope for the Locatelli/McKennie partnership?

    -Evan Sardo

Why doesn’t Strakosha play for Lazio? Not long ago he was a very promising goalkeeper, and now a goalkeeper who saved a balloon is playing before him.

    -Netanel

Do you think Daniel Maldini should move on loan from Milan as he isn’t getting any game time?

    -jill (Sheiff)

During the Milan derby, we saw Inter and Milan fans sitting together in their team colours at the San Siro, something that would be impossible in England. Is this a normal thing in Italian football?

    -Leo (Manchester)

  • Gabriele Marcotti joins us for the Milan Derby

We got the band back together! Gabriele Marcotti is our special guest to discuss the Derby della Madonnina, a.k.a. the Milan Derby, which ended in a draw and saw a goal celebration by an ex; the complaints of Jose Mourinho after Roma's dismal performance losing away at Venezia; and Juventus. Gab also gives us his prediction for the final top 4 in Serie A, and the team previews Italy's coming World Cup qualification matches against Switzerland and Northern Ireland.

Then Mina leaves us speechless with her poetic prowess, and reveals her dreams of becoming a rap star(!), before Nicky discusses her recent interview with Milan and Italy captain and legend, Franco Baresi, about his new autobiography "Libero di Sognare" for The Guardian. Read Nicky's article here.

  • Chronicles Q&A #7

Get your questions in for Mina and Nicky for the Serie A Chronicles Q&A show. Each week we answer your questions tweeted to us at @serieAchronpod using the hashtag #ChroniclesQandA.

    This week's questions:

Kessie and Bennacer had a really solid game vs Roma. Tonali stepped up this season big time. Krunnic also lowkey dropping big performances here and there. Does Milan have the best midfield in Serie A (more than Lazio and Inter, who have had this title for some times)?

    -Manuhe (Ethiopia)

There seems to be a pattern following Mourinho. His teams make questionable defending decisions. Does he get backed for new CB’s in January or does he need to take a look at his coaching staff?

    -JTE

Great pod! I was at the Olimpico last night and watched Roma-Napoli. Anguissa looks amazing. You’ve spoken fondly about him. What’s his story?

    -Anders Kristensson (Rome)

  • Milan & Napoli Fly, Juventus Cry ft. Mark Bosnich

We have a special guest this week as former Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Australian goalkeeper Mark Bosnich joins us from Sydney to discuss the latest in Serie A and look at the Italian clubs in the Champions League. "Bozza" is a co-host of Stan Sports Australia's European competitions coverage. We find out from Mark how close he came to playing in Serie A, and for which club, as well as about his experience at Chelsea under much loved Italian manager Claudio Ranieri. Nicky asks if Mister Ranieri used his "dilly ding dilly dong" bell during Chelsea training!

Plus... It wouldn't be an episode without discussing the current crisis at Juventus who are now 16 points off the pace after consecutive losses against Sassuolo and Verona, while "Cholito" Simeone continues his recent run of unstoppable scoring thanks to some interesting inspiration.

The big match of Sunday night was Roma at home to Milan, with the rossoneri coming away with the result, leaving the human headline manager Jose Mourinho fuming at some refereeing decisions from the sidelines.

Elsewhere, Napoli wins the derby with Salernitana while Lazio and Atalanta played out an exciting 2-2 draw with some dubious happenings in the stands.

And Mina and Nicky discuss just how many horses are really in the race for this season's Serie A title now that both Milan and Napoli have pulled 7 points clear at the top of the table, and where does Inter Milan come into the equation?

    03:00 Juventus in crisis

20:30 Giovanni Simeone can't stop scoring

22:20 Champions League discussion with Boz

28:22 Mark Bosnich discusses his career

39:24 Roma v Milan the big Sunday night match

    52:57 Speaking Napoletano (Napoli chat)

55:40 Is it a two - or more - horse race?

    60:24 Lazio and Atalanta

Get your questions in for Mina and Nicky for the Serie A Chronicles Q&A show. Each week we answer your questions tweeted to us at @serieAchronpod using the hashtag #ChroniclesQandA.

    This week's questions:

As a Newcastle fan what can I expect if Paulo Fonseca is appointed as our new manager? Clearly has a bit of pedigree (mainly from Shakhtar) but doesn’t strike me as someone who could fight through a Premier League relegation battle, or maybe I am wrong.

    -Jonny Douglas (Newcastle Upon Tyne)

How do you judge a 1-0 result? While The defensive capabilities can be lauded, does it show weaknesses in the attacking front?

    -Kartik O (New Dehli, India)

Does Napoli need to sacrifice a run in the Europa League to sustain a race for the Scudetto?

    -Ethan Henson (East Midlands)

Please explain how the obvious and blatant foul on Ismael Bennacer wasn't substantial enough to cancel Porto’s goal against Milan.

    -Lumzy (Lagos, Nigeria)

  • Juventus gets a penalty v Inter and Mourinho is sent off!

In this week's episode, it turns out that you can't kick a player in the penalty box, as Inter found out after Juventus was given a late penalty when Denzel Dumfries missed the ball and kicked Alex Sandro. Hear what Nicky and Mina had to say about the Derby d'Italia drama at the San Siro.

It was poker night at the Bentegodi as Giovanni Simeone was on fire, scoring 4 goals for Hellas Verona against a hapless Lazio. This one is a must-listen really for Nicky's and Mina's discussion about honeymoon activities!

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho and Luciano Spalletti provided the highlights as they were just half of the managers sent from the sidelines this week, in the scoreless Derby del Sole between Roma and Napoli at the Olimpico, a match which saw the twice former Roma coach jeered by the home crowd, which hasn't forgiven him for benching Francesco Totti. And Roma's mid-week UEFA Conference League humiliation and players being thrown under Jose's bus can't go without discussion.

More drama in Florence as Dusan Vlahovic showed his quality despite sections of the home supporters against him. Will he be next in a long history of stars moving on from Fiorentina?

Bologna finished with 9 players to make way for another Milan comeback win after Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored for both teams.

Atalanta conceded a late equaliser against Udinese after their mid-week almost-heroics against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Champions League.

Torino and Genoa provided a scorefest, and some hilarity in Salerno.

    02:45 Inter v Juventus

14:50 Verona on the up and up

22:45 Is the Lazio dressing room trying to get Sarri sacked?

    26:46 Chronicles Tifosi shoutout

29:17 Roma v Napoli and how's Jose going?

    42:00 La Fiesole vs Vlahovic

    44:50 Bologna v Milan

    48:23 Atalanta v Udinese

    49:22 Torino v Genoa

    50:40 Final thoughts
