We, humans, tend to filter God through only one adjective, like "love." God is love, but He is much more than that. In the same way, if we view God's grace of love from only one angle, we risk distorting what love truly is. Love, as defined by God, is multifaceted. In this famous chapter, the apostle explains to the church what happens when love is absent, when love is active, and when love abides.

When the church in Corinth gathered together for the Christ meal, one seat at the table was noticeably absent - THE LORD'S! The apostle writes in a corrective tone to tell the church that what they are practicing in worship is not representative of Christ. He returns their focus upon the Lord by showing how the Lord's Supper in the present remembers the Lord's death in the past and looks to the Lord's judgment in the future.

Sunday, August 8, 2021. 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 | “Love Builds Up." In this text, the apostle answers a question from the church in Corinth about knowledge. If “we have the mind of Christ,” how do we then think like Christ? What do we do with the “knowledge” that we have received? This question comes to light in Corinth through a particular set of circumstances surrounding food sacrificed to idols. Should Christians eat of it, or should they refrain? The apostle goes about answering this question by encouraging the church to “think theologically.” Doing so will result in a very real outcome called “love.” 

Sunday, August 1, 2021. 1 Corinthians 7:25-40 | “This World Is Passing Away.” God's Word does not speak to every detail or circumstance of life. Sometimes, we have to make a judgment call to know what to do. Thankfully, God's Word teaches us how to form good and godly opinions and recognize the same when we need such counsel.

The church in Corinth has questions about matters that Jesus' teaching did not specifically address. This text reveals the apostle's mind at work as he reasons and wrestles with the counsel that he gives them in response. He does this in a principled and godly way that offers a framework for us when we need counsel, too, concerning matters about which God's Word provides no direct command.
