This begins an answer to the possible objection that some may have regarding our sonship. If we are the children of God... heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ.... then why is it that there are multitudes of troubles and afflictions in this life- We are reminded here that we suffer with Christ, and this is a condition of glory with Christ.

Our text tells us that the purpose of God according to election shall stand. This election is not according to our own works, or anything good we have done. For we have not done any good.
