There is a great joy that people have in helping the victims of Hurricane Harvey. You can see it all over the place; in almost every news report people are overjoyed to help.  People are overjoyed and overwhelmed to be helped. Everyone finds finds joy in giving; they find joy in the kindness and the giving to others.  How much more so for us!  How much greater is the joy of God’s child to show compassion and give gifts to help people in their time of need. There is so much joy to be found in giving to others in their need.  2 Corinthians 9:6-15

In this final look at friendship, we'll return to our goals for the series - to know how to be a friend and to know that Jesus is our best friend.  We will only be a good friend to the extent that Jesus is our best friend.  We'll consider both our own friending and Jesus' friending of us.  Hebrews 10:19-24.

Telling the truth is tough business, especially with our closest friends. But that is exactly what they need from us and precisely what we need from them. Love teaches and helps us to speak carefully and with candor about even the toughest subject.

True friendship is an intimate and a deep relationship.  We share a deep emotional connection with another person.  And so our friends ride life’s roller coaster with us – and we with them.  They carefully stand by us – and we by them – so that they might fill us up in just the right way, at just the right time.  Jesus gets us and he is always right there with a timely word and timely help in our time of need.

In faith as in life we need friends who are constant and who will stand by us through thick and thin. Jesus is that friend for us. God help us be and find that constant friend.

What makes a good friend? A great friend? The disciple John once recorded his best friend's words, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friend” (John 15:13).
