With believers being assaulted with wild predications that the world was to come to an end on September 23, I was asked what I thought. This Sunday night message was an attempt to offer a different approach to how we read the last book of the Bible

Dr. Duncan preached to the Gulf South Presbytery, and I was greatly encouraged as I listened to this exposition and application from 1 Kings 19.----Elijah truly -was a man subject to like passions as we are.-

This was the charge I gave to pastor whom we had just ordained with the laying on of hands.----It is our custom for a sermon to be preached, followed by the ordination and installation of the new pastor, which, in turn is followed by a charge to the new pastor and a charge to his congregation.----While the sermon is normal length, the charges are normally very brief.

Self-denial is the essence of the true Christian life- it is the imitation of Christ. We are not saved by taking up our cross in self-denial, but we are not saved without it.----Salvation is always by grace alone, in Christ alone, through faith alone. But true faith is always accompanied by a changed life.----The Lord Jesus took up his cross and received his crown. As we follow in his footsteps, we are promised victory in Jesus.----Believe the truth, confess the truth, not only for yourself as an individual, but also for this local church.-----Judge not the LORD by feeble sense but trust him for his grace- behind a frowning providence, he hides a smiling face.-

As I prepared this sermon for Laredo, Texas, both before and after there was a Hurricane Harvey, I reflected on the great truth that Psalm 124 presents- -If it had not been the LORD who was on our side . . .-----We are confronted by the violence of creation in a fallen world and by the power and malice of Satan who lusts for our complete destruction.----But the LORD is on our side, and he has and will deliver us.

God uses his Word to deliver us from sin, both by exposing the things that we have done in ignorance and by overcoming what we have done in arrogance.

Holy Scripture is God's great gift to believers, and he uses it to draw us into a growing relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Scripture is full of promises that apply to this life as well as the next.

Psalm 19 recounts how nature itself is God's book, declaring his glory and proclaiming his attributes.

Drawing on the parallels between the -Trial by Ordeal- of Numbers 5 and the account of the woman taken in adultery in John 8-1-11, we explored the importance of paternity in both the Old and New Testaments.----Dean J. W. Burgon alerted me to these parallels, and once observed they make John 7 through John 8 flow very well with this section -John 7-53-8-11- staying in its location.----Finally, our only hope is that Jesus drank down to last last bitter dregs the cursed cup, and we have been adopted as God's children.
