Mordecai does the right thing, uncovering a plot to assassinate the king, and gets nothing for it. Haman’s malice is promoted instead, an uncomfortable parallel with the apostle Paul’s own thankless labours, before showing where God’s providence was quietly at work all along.

Real conversion always produces fruit: the gospel reprograms our priorities and frees us to give and serve in ways we never would have before. Paul himself, and the Philippians’ own generosity toward him, are living proof.

God’s ways are not our ways, as Isaiah 55:8 puts it. Esther’s rise to become queen is every girl’s storybook dream, but her own version of it is anything but a fairy tale.

We already know how Esther’s story ends, which is exactly what makes rereading it so rewarding: apparently random events turn out to be essential parts of God’s unfolding plot. This opens the account of Esther’s unlikely rise toward the palace.

Even in first-world comfort we swing between anxiety and discontentment. Paul’s hard-won secret of contentment was learned not from comfort but from having known both plenty and need.

The book of Esther is ultimately about how God preserved the bloodline of the Messiah by stopping a genocide against his people. Consider the almost comic account that follows: a king who cannot control his own wife or his own kingdom.

How do we stand firm in a world set against us? Paul’s closing exhortations in Philippians 4, on unity, joy, gentleness, prayer, and gratitude, draw together into a single practical picture of what standing firm looks like.

Why preach through Esther? Because it’s God’s Word, but also because the book is a masterclass in providence, showing how God brings his good purposes to pass even when his people are downtrodden and evil seems to be winning.

Anxiety rose sharply during the first year of Covid, and it remains one of the most common mental health struggles we face. Paul’s command not to be anxious about anything is a genuinely pastoral, not merely academic, answer.

Divine providence isn’t just a private comfort. It’s a necessary truth that flows both from logic and from how Scripture itself speaks about God’s ongoing rule. This extends the doctrine of providence over sin into its implications for the church and the wider world.
