2 Kings 4:1-7 describes the account of a desperate widow, an empty jar, and a miraculous outpouring of God’s provision. When the widow cried out to Elisha for help, she had nothing—except a little oil. But God used what she had, multiplied it beyond imagination, and met her every need. How often do we come to God feeling empty, unprepared, or insufficient? Yet, just like the widow, He calls us to bring what we have—no matter how small—and trust Him to do the rest.

Often, we may question why our attitude toward spiritual matters is not what it should be, yet we hesitate to acknowledge that the issue lies within our hearts. To cultivate a proper attitude, we must first examine our hearts to determine where our focus truly lies. Is your heart centered on your own desires, or is it fixed on the Lord?

In life, we are often faced with a choice: to live in a way that pleases God or to live in pursuit of our own desires and the approval of the world. Scripture makes it clear that we cannot serve both God and the world, yet many Christians attempt to do so. We must make a deliberate decision—to fully surrender our lives to God or to submit to the fleeting pleasures of this world.

As human beings, we possess a sinful nature that inclines us toward selfishness, stubbornness, and resistance to change. Consequently, many of us need God to break our hearts, leading us to acknowledge and accept our dependence on Him. In the summer of 2024, Michael Jones delivered a sermon to teenagers on the topic of a broken heart.
