Today’s sermon was given by our priest in charge the Rev Nick Mwandia on the nineteenth Sunday after Trinity. 6th October 2024.

Reading: Mark 10 v 1-16

1 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.

2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

3 “What did Moses command you?” he replied.

4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”

5 “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied.

6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’

7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,

8 and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this.

1 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.

12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them.

14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.

‘Teacher,’ said John, ‘we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we
told him to stop, because he was not one of us.’

‘Do not stop him,’ Jesus said. ‘For no one who does a miracle in my name can in
the next moment say anything bad about me,

40 for whoever is not against us is for
us.

41 Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you
belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.

42
‘If anyone causes one of these little ones – those who believe in me – to stumble,
it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung round their neck and they
were thrown into the sea.

43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better
for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never
goes out.

45 And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to
enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

47 And if your eye
causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God
with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

48 where
‘“the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched.”

Everyone will be salted with fire.

‘Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have
salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.’

Romans 8 v 19-25

19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.

20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope

21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.

24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?

25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

Reading: Mark 8 v 27-38

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the
way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of
the prophets.”

29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”

30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.

Jesus Predicts His Death

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be
rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he
must be killed and after three days rise again.

32 He spoke plainly about this, and
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind
me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely
human concerns.”

The Way of the Cross

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants
to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

35 For
whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and
for the gospel will save it.

36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet
forfeit their soul?

37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?

38 If anyone
is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of
Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy
angels.”

Mark 7 v 24-37

Jesus Honors a Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith

24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret.

25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet.

26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man

31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.

32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.

33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue.

34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”).

35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.

37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Mark 7 v 1-8, 14-15 & 21-23

That Which Defiles

1 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus

2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.

3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.

4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.)

5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”

6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.

7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’

8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.

15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”

21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder,

22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.

23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Reading Ephesians 6 v 10-18

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Living Bread

51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’

52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’

53 So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day;

55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.

56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.

57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me.

58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’

Ephesians 4 v 22 to 5 v 2

22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old
self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;

23 to be made new in the
attitude of your minds;

24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in
true righteousness and holiness.

25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your
neighbour, for we are all members of one body.

26 ‘In your anger do not sin’
do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

27 and do not give the devil
a foothold.

28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must
work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have
something to share with those in need.

29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is
helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those
who listen.

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were
sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger,
brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

32 Be kind and
compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God
forgave you.

1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children

2 and live a life of
love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering
and sacrifice to God.

Jesus the Bread of Life

24 So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they
themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when
did you come here?’

26 Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking
for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

27 Do
not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life,
which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his
seal.’

28 Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’

29 Jesus
answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has
sent.’

30 So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see
it and believe you? What work are you performing?

31 Our ancestors ate the manna
in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”’

32 Then
Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread
from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.

33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’

34 They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’

35 Jesus said to them, ‘I am the
bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in
me will never be thirsty.
