  • Well, That's Not Fair
And Just like WE have rules about what is fair, GOD has rules about what is fair. While it is true that in Leviticus we can find, “you shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great” (LEV 19:15), we will find many more instances where God is insisting on fair and equitable distribution, dare I say REdistrubution of resources.

  • Who Are You
Jesus doesn’t condemn Thomas. Doesn’t call him faithless. Doesn’t mock him. Jesus stood among the disciples and offered them peace, and a week later Jesus comes to Thomas and offers Thomas that same peace. That same peace that Jesus offers us, even in the midst of our doubt

  • Bogged Down and Out

    Bogged Down and Out

This is Rita Marquez’ sermon from Sunday, April 3, 2016.  The scripture Psalm 40:1-11. In our service we read from the New Revised Standard Version and from The Message, a modern interpretation by Eugene Peterson. We read both with the hope that our understanding will be enriched.

    This is from The Message:

1I waited and waited and waited for God. At last he looked; finally he listened. 2He lifted me out of the ditch, pulled me from deep mud. He stood me up on a solid rock to make sure I wouldn’t slip. 3He taught me how to sing the latest God-song, a praise-song to our God. More and more people are seeing this: they enter the mystery, abandoning themselves to God. 4Blessed are you who give yourselves over to God, turn your backs on the world’s “sure thing,” ignore what the world worships; 5The world’s a huge stockpile of God-wonders and God-thoughts. Nothing and no one comes close to you! I start talking about you, telling what I know, and quickly run out of words. Neither numbers nor words account for you. 6Doing something for you, bringing something to you—that’s not what you’re after.

Being religious, acting pious—that’s not what you’re asking for. You’ve opened my ears so I can listen. 7So I answered, “I’m coming. I read in your letter what you wrote about me, 8And I’m coming to the party you’re throwing for me.” That’s when God’s Word entered my life, became part of my very being. 9 I’ve preached you to the whole congregation, I’ve kept back nothing, God—you know that. 10I didn’t keep the news of your ways a secret, didn’t keep it to myself. I told it all, how dependable you are, how thorough. I didn’t hold back pieces of love and truth For myself alone. I told it all, let the congregation know the whole story. 11 Now God, don’t hold out on me, don’t hold back your passion. Your love and truth are all that keeps me together.

  • I Have Seen
And perhaps, like Mary, when we hear God call our name we realize that God is showing us a new way to relate to the world – no longer and “us” and a “them” but a “we.” No longer a need to GET good but and understanding that we ARE good.

  • We Would See Jesus
We Would See Jesus This is Rita Marquez’ sermon from Sunday, March 20, 2016. The scripture is John 12:12-19. In our service we read from the New Revised Standard Version and from The Message, a modern interpretation by Eugene Peterson. We read both with the hope that our understanding will be enriched. This is from The Message: 12-15 The next day the huge crowd that had arrived for the Feast heard that Jesus was entering Jerusalem. They broke off palm branches and went out to meet him. And they cheered: Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in God’s name! Yes! The King of Israel! Jesus got a young donkey and rode it, just as the Scripture has it: No fear, Daughter Zion: See how your king comes, riding a donkey’s colt. 16 The disciples didn’t notice the fulfillment of many Scriptures at the time, but after Jesus was glorified, they remembered that what was written about him matched what was done to him. 17-19 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, was there giving eyewitness accounts. It was because they had spread the word of this latest God-sign that the crowd swelled to a welcoming parade. The Pharisees took one look and threw up their hands: “It’s out of control. The world’s in a stampede after him.”

  • Forget About It
Forget About It This is Bob Spears’ sermon from Sunday, March 13, 2016. The scripture is Isaiah 43:16-21. In our service we read from the New Revised Standard Version and from The Message, a modern interpretation by Eugene Peterson. We read both with the hope that our understanding will be enriched. This is from The Message: 16-21 This is what God says, the God who builds a road right through the ocean, who carves a path through pounding waves, The God who summons horses and chariots and armies—they lie down and then can’t get up; they’re snuffed out like so many candles: “Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new.It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands. Wild animals will say ‘Thank you!’ —the coyotes and the buzzards—Because I provided water in the desert, rivers through the sun-baked earth, Drinking water for the people I chose, the people I made especially for myself, a people custom-made to praise me.

  • Finders Keepers
Jesus is inviting us to rejoice with God at the finding of the lost. Jesus is asking us to rejoice because God goes out an actively searches for people to bring them back in. What a beautiful thing to know that we are offered to be part of a grace so big that it cannot be limited, even by our limited understanding and experience of it

  • Hen In The Fox House
So are we going to let fear motivate us and change us and deter us from what we do or are we going to tell our Herod – – I am too busy for you right now. I have love to give and I have hope to bring and I have healing to show

  • Desert Dwellers
How many people who are now starving would have preferred that Jesus turn the stones to bread? What better way to “Feed my sheep” than to make food for them? …But if Jesus could just whip up a loaf of bread on the spot, the future lesson of the feeding of the 5,000 would be lost.
