Last time we saw why Jesus is a better high priest than the priests of Aaron who administered the Law. That means Jesus administers a better promise, too. Just as Psalm 110 foretold the coming of a better priest, Jeremiah 31 announced the coming of the new covenant which Christ mediates. This covenant promises forgiveness, communion with God, and a transformation of the heart. "The New Moralism" is the first installment of Grace's new Worldview Wednesday, featuring a lecture and Q&A. It's a way of pursuing our shared longing for more depth. Here's a summary of "The New Moralism": Nietzsche called us to move "beyond good and evil" -- i.e., beyond the Christian conception of morality -- and while it took a century or more to get here, we have finally arrived in a post-biblical moral landscape. Only it doesn't look quite the way we feared. Instead of no moral code, we have a new moral code, one that is enforced just as vigorously as the old one. In this talk, we will spend some time trying to understand how we got here, and how the new moral system functions. Over the next four weeks we will dig deeper with the author of Hebrews into Christ's office of priesthood. Established in Psalm 110 by a covenant promise sworn by God to Jesus, this office traces back to before the Levitical priesthood, before the law was given to Moses, all the way back to a mysterious king/priest named Melchizedek. In Genesis 14, Melchizedek, King of Salem -- "a priest of God Most High" -- brings out bread and wine to Abram and blesses him. Christ's priesthood is not superior just because it stretches back farther, though. His is a permanent priesthood. Unlike the priests of Aaron, Christ lives forever to make intercession for us and his sacrifice, made once, stands for all time. The priesthood of Jesus is better than anything that went before it. Are you saved? Are you sure? Are you really, really sure? The harder you question your assurance, the more uncertain you feel. (It doesn't help that the author of Hebrews keeps warning us not to let go of our confession of faith.) If these warnings lead you to doubt, it might be that you're looking to yourself rather than Jesus for hope. We have to turn away from the hopelessness of immaturity and the hopelessness of unbelief before we can find our hope in Jesus Christ. In Numbers 13-14, the Bible tells us that on the border of the Promised Land, the people turned back because of unbelief. Psalm 95 recalls this failure and urges God's people today not to repeat that mistake. The author of Hebrews picks up the thread, saying that if the Israelites in the wilderness did not enter into God's rest, then there remains a rest for us. The first Christians grew up believing that their hope was in keeping the law of Moses. After the initial enthusiasm of their conversion was over, it was hard not to look back and consider all that they left behind. We can't help looking back ourselves, falling back on old certainties. The author of Hebrews urges us instead to look forward. Consider Jesus, not the past. Consider his faithfulness. Consider how worthy he is of honor. How did Jesus become the ideal priest to offer himself as a sacrifice on our behalf? The author of Hebrews says he was made "perfect through suffering." Not only that, but he adds it was fitting that Christ's obedience be completed this way. Our view of suffering differs so much from the Bible's that ideas like this are hard to accept. We expect God to abolish suffering, but instead, in Christ he enters into it. We need to dig deeper to find out why it was fitting, and what Christ's suffering means for us when we suffer. When Jesus turned water into wine at the marriage in Cana, the guests were impressed. "You saved the best for last," they told the host. Like that wine, Jesus himself is the best saved for last, the ultimate self-revelation of God. Everything changed when he entered the picture. To understand the Gospel, we need to understand how everything changed -- and why. The Old Testament was a history of prophets, priests, and kings, but at their best they were only shadows of what was to come. Jesus is the last prophet, the last priest, and the last king.
