We continue our way through the small catechism with a revelation: its okay to doubt God because we can't actually believe in Jesus. Its beyond our logic, our will, our strength and everything we've ever done in church. Never stop asking questions of God, never put down your faith when it doesn't make sense. Faith is a gift and God is listening; might as well be straight with Jesus from the start. The sermon for the second week of Lent from John 3.1-17 and the Apostles' Creed.

As we move through our season of Lent, we will be walking through the Small Catechism. The SC contains basic teachings on the 10 Commandments, Apostles' Creed, Lord's Prayer, Communion and Baptism. This week we're wondering if its possible to keep all 10 Commandments without breaking any of them. And if we can't, why not and whether or not it matters. Our sermon is connected to Matthew 4.1-11.

Death will find all of us. Yet it has nothing to say about our life in Christ. We wear the cross of ash as God's light breaking into the night. Our Ash Wednesday sermon preached on Matthew 6.

Jesus takes us to the top of a mountain to witness the glory of God, then tells us to keep it quiet. What, then, can we tell people about Christ if not the promise of glory washing over us in God's presence? There is another story, another sign of God's Grace that may speak more dearly of our suffering people. Its not the one we want to tell, it is the one we're called to proclaim and live. We can imagine God at work at some point in history because we have faith. We struggle to see Christ present with us, in this time. We have no idea what we are capable of. But God does. We doubt our gifts and disbelief our potential and do our own thing, despite God's kingdom near us. Then Jesus finds us. He messes with our plans and calls on us to follow him. Can we, like the disciples, hear his voice and get out of the boat? When Jesus gets too close to our daily lives, we get nervous. Jesus needs to be one of us, but we don't want him being like us. We want Jesus to be better than us. And yet, Jesus needs to be Jesus, so that we can be made right with God. The sermon preached Sunday, January 8 on Matthew 3.13-17, the baptism of Jesus.

We all know Darkness; it is everywhere and marks every part of our lives. Darkness wants us to think it has all the power and will use whatever it has to keep us from hope. And yet, the Light shines forth. The Darkness will not overcome us, we have Christ's light. A Christmas Day sermon on God's light piercing the Darkness and sending us out as bearers of Light. John 1.1-14

When does Jesus take it too far? When was the last time we were offended by Christ? John the Baptist isn't sure about following Jesus, now that he's paying the cost of discipleship. Doubt is part of faith, so the good news of God's Grace must come from beyond our wisdom and power. The sermon preached for Advent week 3, Dec 11, 2016 on Matthew 11.2-11.

The prophets are around us to remind of what we need to do and don't want to do. In our gospel, John calls on us to repent, to make our path straight to God because God is near. Can we be vulnerable with our Lord? Can we be straight with God, knowing that we will be forgiven and set up as God's people?
