In this next part of the sermon on the plain, Jesus commanded us to love our enemies, to do good to those who hate us, to bless those who curse us, and to pray for those who mistreat us. Jesus' standard for for living id incredibly high and incredibly counter-cultural. Nevertheless it is what he expects of each one of his followers.

It was The Battle in the Desert. In Matthew 4, the Spirit led Jesus out into the desert to be tempted by the devil. Why did he have to go? What was accomplished/demonstrated there? As we watch Jesus counter Satan’s temptations with Scripture, we learn valuable lessons on how we can defend against temptation in our lives as well.

In this first part of Jesus' sermon on the plain, he taught that the values of his kingdom are in complete opposition to the values of our culture. In fact, his disciples are to prize what the world pities and pity what the world prizes. The natural outcome of this counter-cultural living is that many people will hate followers of Jesus. In the midst of this, Jesus commands us to rejoice.

The Pharisees in Jesus' time were obsessed with rules to the point that they had lost the heart of God's law.
