In this Gospel account, Jesus is confronted with a group of self-satisfied religious leaders. It brings to Jesus' mind the words of the prophet Isaiah, “This people honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.”

Jesus asks his disciples if they, like so many others, will also turn from him because his teaching is hard to accept.

Those who met Jesus in person seemed to have a lot of trouble understanding who he was. In chapter 6 of the book of John Jesus uses the word ‘bread’ eleven times to describe himself. He is in no doubt as to his identity.

A large crowd was following Jesus, a crowd that believed Jesus could feed them for free, day after day.

What does Jesus mean when he says “I am the bread of life”?
