Jesus addresses a 2nd “external” rule by addressing lust and marriage. This week, Jesus challenges us by showing that our lustful thoughts are an overflow of our guilty heart.

Jesus starts challenging 4 external “rules” by calling people to go deeper and focus on their heart, which results in true freedom and life change. This week- Jesus leans in on our hearts to how anger enslaves us, and to be free we need a transformed heart.

Religion is often summarized by a list of do’s and don’ts- a list that if we’re honest none of us can fulfill. Yet when Jesus came- He didn’t do away with all the rules- He fulfilled them. As Christians- our standing before God isn’t in our keeping of the law, but in Christ’s fulfillment.

Whether we know it or not- everyone has influence. You either are a good influence or a bad influence. Since people far from God matter greatly to God, Jesus reminds Christians that our influence should be used for good to point people back to a life changing relationship with God. Key idea: Christians using our influence for the Kingdom.

In the opening of the greatest sermon ever, Jesus begins by contrasting Christianity from religion, identifying that Christianity is completely counter-cultural from the religious status quo. Key idea: It’s who you are, not what you do.
