    Luke 2:8-20

“In Him (Jesus) was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
    - John 1:4-5

Big Idea: The Good News Of The Gospel Breaks Through The Darkness To Provide Light And Life For Me And You

    Gospel treasures to ponder daily:

    1) Hope: God is always pursuing the outcast (v. 8-20)

“And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, He has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him.”
    Colossians 1:22-23

    2) Peace: the gospel offers salvation freely to all (v. 10-14)

“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in His flesh the diving wall of hostility.”
    – Ephesians 2:13-14

    3) Joy: God’s glory dwells among us (v. 8-20)

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
    – John 1:14

    4) New Life: God transforms us to live abundantly and eternally (v. 16-20)

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
    – Matthew 13:44

    Luke 1:5-25

Big Idea: God Always Keeps His Promises

When God seems silent and all hope feels lost:

    1) Remember that God always hears our prayers: pray to God fervently (v. 5-13)

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
    - Hebrews 4:16

    2) Remember that God always keeps His promises: believe God’s Word fully (v. 14-20)

    3) Remember that God always provides deliverance: rest in God’s eternal faithfulness (v. 15-23)

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”
    - Isaiah 40:8

    John 21:1-25

Big Idea: Christ’s Surpassing Greatness Propels My Enduring Faithfulness

Christ’s surpassing greatness propels us to:

    1) Humble dependence (v. 1-17)

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
    – John 15:5

    2) Godly grief (v. 9-19)

“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”
    – 2 Corinthians 7:10

    3) Faithful devotion (v. 15-23)

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
    – Matthew 16:18

Fruit that you are accurately valuing Jesus’ greatness:
    1) Investing your life to build what lasts for eternity? (v. 15-17)
    2) Willingly paying the price? (v. 18-19)
    3) Doing your job faithfully? (v. 20-23)
    4) Wholehearted Exaltation (v. 24-25)

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Big Idea: Believing In Jesus Leads To Receiving Life Through Jesus

    You May Have Life:

    1) Filled with supernatural peace (v. 19-20)

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
    - John 14:27

“He (Jesus) Himself is our peace.”
    - Ephesians 2:14

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”
    – Isaiah 26:3

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
    - Philippians 4:4-7

    2) Full of eternal purpose (v. 21-23)

    John 19:1-16a

Big Idea: King Jesus Got What He Didn’t Deserve So We Don’t Get What We Do Deserve

    Behold Your King!:

    1) Willing to suffer for you (v. 1-6)

“But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed.”
    - Isaiah 53:5

    2) Willing to humble Himself for you (v. 5-11)

“So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy … Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
    – Philippians 2:1, 3-11

“He (Jesus) must increase, but I must decrease.”
    - John 3:30

    3) Willing to be crucified for you (v. 12-16a)

“So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, ‘I am innocent of this man’s blood; see it yourselves.’”
    – Matthew 27:25

    Bookends of beholding in John:
    1) “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” - John 1:29b
    2) “Behold your King!” - John 19:14b

    John 18:12-40

Big Idea: The Truth Is There Is Only One True King And His Name Is Jesus

    Clash Of The Kingdoms:

    1) Self-righteousness or Savior-reliance? (v. 12-32)

    2) Earthly infatuated or eternally focused? (v. 28-38)

“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a Kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.”
    – Daniel 7:13-14

    Life-transforming invitations from King Jesus:
    1) Believe and receive
    2) Surrender and submit
    3) Pursue and participate
    4) Focus and hope

    3) Believer of lies or believer of truth? (v. 28-38)

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me.”
    - John 14:6

“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
    – John 8:31-32

    4) Rejecting King Jesus or choosing King Jesus? (v. 38-40)

    John 18-1-27

Big Idea: Even When We Are Unfaithful Jesus Is Always Faithful

    Even When We Are Unfaithful:

    1) Jesus is still in total control (v. 1-11)

Jesus is always in total control:
    1) Jesus knows all (v. 4-5)
    2) Jesus is powerful over all (v. 5-6)
    3) Jesus’ word is fulfilled in all (v. 9)
    4) Jesus’ purposes are accomplished in all (v. 2, 5, 11)

“From that time, Jesus began to show His disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, ‘Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.’ But he turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
    – Matthew 16:21-23

    2) Jesus still loves without limits (v. 7-11)

    3) Jesus still pays our price (v. 11-27)

“And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how He (Jesus) had said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.’ And he (Peter) went out and wept bitterly.”
    - Luke 22:61-62

When my flesh begins to fear:
    1) Anchor and abide in Jesus’ unmatched power (v. 1-6)
    2) Anchor and abide in Jesus’ unlimited love (v. 7-11)
    3) Anchor and abide in Jesus’ unchanging Word (v. 9)
    4) Anchor and abide in Jesus’ unmerited favor (v. 11)
