Every day we’re bombarded with incentives to do things we’d rather not. We’re made to feel like we’re missing out on the good life, holding out on our loved ones, or walking out on some golden opportunities. Get solar panels! Buy gold! Upgrade your internet service! Usually fear, guilt, and shame drive ad campaigns. And they work! But here’s a question: What motivates you to live the Christian life? Why do you tell the truth when a lie would advance your career? Why avoid clicking on that provocative link when you’re the only one in the room? Why bother going to church, giving, serving, and meeting needs? What motivates you to obey God? In Romans 7, Paul shares an explosive truth that many Christians miss. It’s not small. It’s not inconsequential. It’s not optional. A significant question I’ve heard over the years—and asked—is how we relate to God’s moral law now that we follow Jesus? Are we under law or under grace? That question has produced some of the most controversial writings in history, and has even split Christians into different groups and pitted them against one another. The Apostle Paul addressed this question in Romans 7, a chapter not without controversy itself. This week, we continue our journey through Romans and crack open that chapter. I stumbled across this quote years ago that still stops me in my tracks: “All men seek happiness. This is without exception…This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.” The author, Blaise Pascal was saying something profound. We’re all on a quest for joy, but so often, our paths lead to misery—and stay there.
