We have been studying Matthew 23 and Jesus’ denunciation of the false shepherds of Israel. In verses 13-33 Jesus lays out eight indictments of the scribes and the Pharisees which help us understand the wickedness of man-made religion. Jesus indicts the shepherds of Israel with… 1. Closing the Kingdom (v. 13) 2. Preying on the vulnerable (v. 14) 3. Indoctrinating in error (v. 15) 4. Encouraging prevarication (v. 16-22) 5. Majoring on the minors (v. 23-24) 6. Practicing externalism (v. 25-26) 7. Ignoring inner purity (v. 27-28) 8. Persecuting God’s spokesmen (v. 29-33) The indictment is broken down into two phases: 1. They are fraudulent in their piety (29-30) 2.
