While we can't necessarily look at our circumstances to determine whether we are walking according to God's will, we can find confirmation as we pray, read His Word, and walk in obedience to the truth we know.

This message considers the difference between a gift and a wage in the context of our salvation. What do we owe God for our salvation and the gift of His Son? Why do many hymns contain the language of debt if eternal life is a free gift? "Jesus paid it all; all to Him I owe"; "Praise the Saviour, ye who know Him; Who can tell how much we owe Him?" Considering these thoughts in light of Romans 3 and 6 can be helpful.
