Sermons with Reverend Killjoy

Sermon audio at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the Midway for All Saints Sunday, Revised Common Lectionary Year A. Scripture: Revelation 7:9-17. Today I talked about death and resurrection, and how the saints can inspire us to look beyond them to Jesus. What does Revelation tell us about Jesus the Lamb?

Sermon audio at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the Midway for Reformation Sunday, Revised Common Lectionary Year A (also B and C but this year is A). Scripture: Psalm 46. Getting in the swing of things at Bethlehem, and Reformation Sunday is a great time to look at how to do that. I wound up talking about Scripture and did an impromptu Bible study style lesson on Romans 3:19ff in the recent NRSVue translation.

Sermon audio at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the Midway for the 21st Sunday after Pentecost / Lectionary 29, Revised Common Lectionary Year A. Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10. My first Sunday in a new interim, I needed to introduce myself and set some expectations. Paul's letter to a church he loved offered an excellent framework for doing so.

Sermon audio at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, MN for the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost / Lectionary 24, Revised Common Lectionary Year A. Scripture: Matthew 18:21-35. On my last Sunday at Christus Victor in Apple Valley, I talked about math and music and what we can learn from scripture.

Sermon audio at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, MN for the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost / Lectionary 22, Revised Common Lectionary Year A. Scripture: Romans 12:9-21. On the day Christus Victor voted to call Rev. Sarah Fike to be their next pastor, I got to explain the power of "y'all."

Sermon audio at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, MN for the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost / Lectionary 21, Revised Common Lectionary Year A. Scripture: Exodus 1:8--2:10. This was a very fun sermon in which I got to help prepare the congregation for their first woman pastor in a lead role. The lectionary story of the women who facilitated the birth and growth of Moses was perfect for this.

Sermon audio at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, MN for the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost / Lectionary 20, Revised Common Lectionary Year A. Scripture: Matthew 15:10-28 In this one I talked about seeing one of my favorite musicians and what his thoroughly un-religious perspective has shown me about Jesus.

Sermon audio at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, MN for the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost / Lectionary 19, Revised Common Lectionary Year A. Scripture: Matthew 14:22-33. This sermon begins with the announcement that Christus Victor has a Final Candidate to be the next pastor, and then I talked about preparing for that new reality.

Sermon audio at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, MN for the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost / Lectionary 18, Revised Common Lectionary Year A. Scripture: Genesis 32:22-31 and Matthew 14:13-21. What's in a name?

Sermon audio at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, MN for the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost / Lectionary 17, Revised Common Lectionary Year A. Scripture: Romans 8:26-39. As I always say, Romans is where our theology comes from, more or less. This is the best part of Romans, so listen up.
