Join me, Dr. F Scott Feil, as I speak with special guest Dr. Nancy Smith on the Healthcare Education Transformation Podcast. We dive into the topic of service-based learning in physical therapy education, which has been a crucial area for both of us.

We also talk about the definition of service-based learning from both the community and student perspectives. Dr. Smith shares how her program partners with United Way to run a pop-up clinic that serves patients with MS and other neurological conditions, and the reflective assignments and projects assigned to students.

Moreover, we discuss the benefits of intentional service learning in physical therapy education. Dr. Smith emphasizes how students are exposed to different orthopedic conditions, which helps alleviate anxiety on their first day of clinical. We also talk about how students develop clinical skills, including interview and documentation skills, and provide direct client support.

As someone who has incorporated service-based learning into my work life, I believe this episode will be an enlightening and valuable resource for physical therapy students and practitioners. Tune in to discover how service-based learning can be an obligation for physical therapists, and how it benefits both students and the community.

Nancy Smith, PT, DPT, PhD received her MPT and DPT from Saint Louis University, and her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Learning Design and Technology at North Carolina State University.
