I personally think it's good to have a mixture of both fundraising and business income streams fueling your vision!
And guess what? I found it's easier to attract funders when they see you have sustainability and you are creating your own income streams as well!
Many of our Nonprofits are taking matters into their own hands and finding ways for the Nonprofit to fund its own projects and magically funders seem to appear! It's no magic! Money attracts to money!
Is there a service or product that you can tie to your mission? How can you serve an area of the community and solve a problem worth paying for at the same time? How can you add value?
I absolutely love the YMCA's model! Health and fitness for the general community and assistance for those who are in the lower income bracket! A true Win Win!
If you are raising funds the traditional way this year, remember you are not begging for money! You are asking people to join hands with you in solving a problem that affects an entire community!
