I couldn’t believe it…

Subject of the email: “Remarkable Insights Podcast Brief”

Body: We’ve included the list of deliverables as well as the tasks that we were hoping would be managed by an external, experienced Podcast Producer (like yourself). That said, we are absolutely open to your suggestions regarding the best way that we could work together to bring this podcast to life!

I scrolled right down to the bottom ignoring any and all work expectations, asset delivery, timelines, pre-production, post production… till I got the near end of the email.

Budget.

The lights went off in my head. There was a market for bringing other people’s podcasts to life.

On the second episode I mentioned I had 5 things going for me when starting this business. The first and most important being the love and support of my now fiancé Emily.

But two years on does that same support exist or are there some cracks in the foundation?

I’m risking everything to pursue my passion with the Start Up and that sacrifice isn’t my own it’s also the worn on the shoulders of my partner Emily who is here for this episode.

Tuesday 6th September 2022

My partner Emily, who we will hear from on the next episode, had given me an A3 leather-bound business diary with my initials on it.

I started writing on the very first page, that much I know. I hadn't read it in 18 months. Hand on my heart this is the first time I’ve looked back on this moment.

I remember where I wrote it though, sitting in the hotel reception at Crown Towers in Melbourne about to head into a client’s morning event. My stomach was in knots. It felt like I was stuck to the couch. Like I had to pay the toll for financial ignorance.

Two years on and reliving the moments of this episode I feel like an idiot!

Knowing what I know now, which still isn't as much as I should but I'm always learning, I wish I could go back to 2022 and help guide the path past the mistakes (plural) that I made. HOWEVER, I also know that had I not made those mistakes we wouldn't be where we are now. That's not to say we are in the clear, there is still turbulence around my runway, but I feel more confident in taking risks that I've at least forecast the outcomes of.

In 2022 after signing two large sponsorship partnerships I thought I could rinse and repeat the same strategy and have consistent income from selling our two podcasts while creating two more in the background.

I was wrong.

At the end of 2021 I quit my 6 figure, once dream job of working on Radio heard across the country… to start a business. A podcast business. This is a podcast about starting that podcast business…

This series is inspired by 'Start Up' the story of Gimlet Media told through the voice of Alex Blumberg. Alex's podcast being a huge success as he chronicled the rise of his Podcast Company to its acquisition by Spotify for a reported 200 million dollars.

Alex and I have uncanny similarities

• Both come from extensive radio and production backgrounds
• Both Fathers 
• Both knew/know nothing about business 
• Both had dreams of changing the landscape of video/audio

I listen to the 'Start Up 'podcast to give me hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that I'm not crazy for thinking I have the ability to move the meter with my knowledge and skills, and that there is a need and want, more than ever, to tell real stories in a world of artificial lives and technology.
