  • electrocaïne session #046 – SLAM (UK)

We trust that electrocaïne listeners need no introduction to the duo called Slam and the wonderful world of Soma Records. In the oft chance that you do, then this mix recorded live from their Pressure at the Arches night in Glasgow and generous interview should get your history lesson going good and proper.
After such an illustrious history in the music business spanning almost every aspect, what are a couple of your favourite projects?
We spent a long time making our 2nd album ‘Alien Radio’ (which came out in 2001), using vocalists and musicians on some of the tracks and experimenting whilst also developing our production techniques. It was a labour of love to some extent and really shaped us as producers and artists. It turned out into a piece of work that has now passed the test of time. ‘Lifetimes’, which came from the Alien Radio sessions, remixed by Pan-Pot, was one of the biggest Soma 20th anniversary releases last year.
More recently we are really enjoying the freedom we have allowed ourselves in the studio – with no specific deadlines – mainly making tracks for our Paragraph label and for Drumcode along with some remixes we have been doing. It’s very much material for our live and DJ sets and we are road testing new material every weekend on tour or at our residencies in Glasgow and London. Soma are currently compiling the singles along with recent remixes we have done and will be releasing as a compilation double album entitled ‘Collecting Data’.

What would you encourage future generations to focus on?
If you are making music then remember that it’s a form of individual expression and try to forge your own sound and style – stand out from the crowd and don’t imitate or follow. And keep your quality control high. Don’t release bland average music. It benefits nobody.
    What is your proudest moment?
One must be reaching the landmark 20th anniversary of our label Soma last year. It’s been tough at times – being independent and continuing to develop and grow though out that time span is a great achievement for us and the team.
A rather low point in the work was…
All of our back catalogue was destroyed in a warehouse fire started by the rioters in London this summer. Thankfully nobody was hurt and we have small quantities of most things at the office but it’s still a sad goodbye to the physical records and CDs, which will never be manufactured again now we are in the digital age.
What are the top 5 influencing albums for Slam?

What are the essential ingredients for making music collaborations work?
It’s an interesting time to be asked this question because we are embarking on a new project which involves collaborations called ‘Alliances’, working with a lot of our peers including Laurent Garnier, Paul Ritch, Pan-Pot and Joris Voorn. We like the idea of working with others and sharing ideas and directions on a track, both sides adding ingredients to the mixture and having a sense of which direction the finished track w...

    We interrogate them a little:
When, where and how was this mix recorded?
The mix was recorded 27 Jan 2012 at my studio in Durham City Centre using Traktor Scratch Pro.
Describe this mix in 3 words:
    Deep, Jazzy, Voyage
How did Zero dB come about?
Zero dB came about at the start of the millennium when myself and Chris (Vogado) had finished building our recording studio we had in London. ‘Come Party’ was the first track we made in the new studio and kind of defined our sound right from the start.

Could you tell us about The Fluid Ounce Studio?

It doesn’t really exist anymore, I moved to Tokyo about 5 years ago and Chris moved to Barcelona, we have our own studios now, I’ve just completed building one in Durham and Chris still has his studio in Barcelona. Technology has helped immensely, we can still work together and send stuff backwards and forwards to each other, we still managed to work together when I was in Tokyo and he was in Barcelona, but got together for 6 months to put finishing touches to the last album we did (‘Bongos, Bleeps and Basslines’).

What is one of the most interesting project Zero dB has been involved in so far?
Probably the Sun Ra remix we did with Gilles Peterson. We were asked to do the remix after the success of the Suba remix we did (‘Samba do Gringo’) and we’re given some original tapes from Sun Ra recordings. We then thought it would be a great idea to ask Gilles if he wanted to get involved in the project knowing how much of a Sun Ra fan he is. He came down to the studio with a case of Sun Ra records he’d collected over the years. We used all sorts of crazy sounds and it ended up being the first track on our Reconstruction compilation we released on Fluid Ounce.

New studio album on Ninja Tunes?
We’ll have to wait and see, I’m still always working on new stuff (eg. The Oki Bass, the first track on the DJ mix) and chris is too, we need to get enough ideas together to say, OK, we’ve got enough stuff to release as an album now, I don’t know when that will be though.

Listen during odd hours, after hours, sometime out of time and cling onto the vibe for a spaceship ride with a grin.
    We interrogate them a little:

When, where and how was this mix recorded?
This set was recorded in July 2011 at our residency at the Electric Pickle in Miami. We always use 2 turntables and 2 cdjs when we perform. Lots of vinyl, no computers!
Was there any particular idea in mind when recording it?
We’ve basically been resident DJs at the Pickle for over a year so it really feels like home when we play there. This set was in the middle of the summer so we played a bunch of sweaty, sticky jams and of course tried to go on a journey…
What comes to mind when you think of Singapore?
Islands, rain forests and durians. Oh and we heard its really clean!
What can we look forward to for your set in Singapore?
Lots of ups and downs. A winding road through house, disco, funk and r+b. Plus some previews of our new album!
    Will it be 6 hours?
We play as long they let us play
Has this year been off to a good start? What’s happening?
2012 has been great so far. From beach parties at BPM festival in Mexico to friends’ weddings we’ve had some fun, but mostly been chilling at home in Miami. Singapore is where we really kick off our musical year!

This is a live recorded set.

Winning fans over one mix at a time, Germany’s Patrick Zigon does it again with a gleaming deep diving mix chartering untravelled waters to emerge with precious sonic pearls and dimes. We can almost proclaim that going deep is going up. Bravo!
Where when and how was this mix recorded?
I recorded this mix in my “Traumraum” studio in southern germany. I work with Traktor and Timecode-Vinyls. I play records since 1996, so i still need the vinyl-feeling in my hands ;-)
How would you describe the mix?
The mix shows the kind of music i love and play in clubs where people like innovative sound. Deep and hypnotic tracks from different genres such as deep house and dub techno.
Top 3 weapons in the bag?
Mathew Jonson – Dayz [Crosstwon Rebels]

Marc DePulse – Lessons In Dub [Ostwind]

Patrick Zigon – Black Out feat. Paulo Olarte (Himan Remix) [Danza Macabra]
Who are some of your musical influences?
There are loads of influences, not only electronic music. I love jazz and classical music for example. if i would start to drop names, we’d need a lot of space, so i keep it simple: biggest influence is music that touches my soul, doesn’t matter which genre.
Ever thought of moving to Berlin?
Yeah sure i thought about it. A few years ago i’ve been pretty sure to move there. But i love the place where i’m living. Constance is a small beautiful city near to switzerland and austria, with a big beautiful lake. It’s an important inspiration for me, so at the moment there is no need to move there.
What are some future projects of yours we can look forward to?
2011 i started some interesting projects and collaborations. Next releases are the amazing second remix pack of my album “The Alpha State” and a collaboration EP on Tanzbar Musik called “With A Bigly Help Of My Friends EP” with Martin Eyerer, Todd Bodine, Louis Osbourne etc. 2012 i will start my label and will tour the globe, so enough things to do ;-)

  • electrocaïne session #042 – Vincent Corvec (Réunion)

An introspective mix from the island of Réunion. Smooth operator Vincent Corvec flows from classic hip hop to disco and funk in laid-back fashion, where the fish are jumping and the living easy. Slow it down, slide in “The Syllogisme of Foreplay”.
When and where was this mix recorded and what equipment?
On September the 3rd, in my apartment in Réunion Island. I kept the mix with me for 3 months to distress it and make it taste like oak-aged wine. I have recorded simply using a laptop and a midi-controller. I’m not a technician but I rather do a good mix with midi than a bad one with turntables. I try to find the best wav re-edits of every track, to be faithful to the whole emotion of the original.
Can you tell us about the mix itself?
It’s a slow one. We begin around 90 bpm and stop under 110. It’s a mingling of old classics and brand new songs so I decided to create a meeting place for them. They’re 10 tracks that I enjoy listening by myself or with friends; some kind of a soulful set you can listen for the aperitif and chill-out. If this podcast had a name, it will be “The Syllogisme of Foreplay”.
Top 5 records of all time?
    “Roseland N.Y. Live” – Portishead

    “Poison” – Jay Jay Johanson

    “Surrender” – the Chemical Brothers

“Paris Sous les Bombes” – N.T.M.

“Histoire de Melody Nelson” – Serge Gainsbourg

Tell the world something about Réunion
Réunion is the island I partially grew up and where I’m living. It is in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and Mauritius. The motto is “Florebo Quocumque Ferar” or “I’ll bloom everywhere I’ll be”. But images speak louder than words so check the video below:

I wish I will be able to let go.
