Seven Mile Road

Acts 2.37-41

Have you heard the good news of Jesus, had your heart opened, and wondered, “What should I do?” If you have, you are not alone. That’s a question people have been asking since the first sermon an apostle preached about Jesus. Acts 2.1-36

After much waiting for God to fulfill his promise to the disciples, the Holy Spirit arrives in Jerusalem with quite a stir. Amidst the confusion, it's fair to ask: What was happening there? What's the point? What is this about? But as we dig in this Sunday, we'll see the Holy Spirit's arrival is about Jesus being proclaimed and about Jesus being believed. The Spirit comes so that God's people could know ... and know for certain.

Acts 1.12-26

This Sunday, we’ll see Jesus’ disciples together, united, and what the scriptures call of “one accord.” Yet, there was no overlooking what Judas had done in betraying Jesus at his arrest. There was no overlooking that left a gap in their leadership. But as the disciples pursued God in prayer, they found out that God was already at work and provided perfectly for his mission, even in betrayal.

Acts 1.1-11

As we kick off our new sermon series through the book of Acts this Sunday, we’ll see the big mission God puts before his people: to witness to the end of the earth. But we’ll also see that there’s _even_ good news about this good news, because the disciples aren’t alone on the mission. Instead, God’s people are sent to carry out God’s plan under Christ’s authority by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Has your world ever flipped upside down in a moment? Have your hopes and dreams that seemed so close seemingly come crashing down unexpectedly?_

If so, you’ll understand the predicament of Jesus’ disciples on the Sunday after his crucifixion. They expected so much, but now are left with an empty tomb they can’t explain ... until a man they don’t recognize walks alongside them on a road out of Jerusalem before breaking bread with them. Then, they ran, and they told what happened to the other disciples.

Join us this Sunday as we spend time in one of our favorite stories as a church: the Seven Mile Road story.

What do we do when our hopes and dreams die? How should we respond when the projects or the home or the family we wanted we don’t get?

Everything around us tells us that if we work hard, if we apply the right methods or know the right processes or make the right connections, then all of our dreams, all of our ways, will come true.

But the scriptures tell us something different. Unless the Lord builds, protects, and sustains all of these things then all of our work will be in vain. But if we belong to Jesus then the work done in his name will not be in vain.

Psalm 127

This Sunday we’ll look at Psalm 146 and see how the text teaches us to continually bring our praises to the Lord, for he alone is worthy of them and able to deliver us from whatever life throws our way.
