With dramatic, vivid detail, the poetic masterpiece of Nahum shows that God refuses to abandon his rebellious people when they stray into destructive paths, instead responding to spiritual adultery with love and power. The application to our own lives may hit close to home, but there is also abundant Gospel hope: Jesus' severe compassion leads him to relentlessly pursue his people for their salvation.
As he explores the prophet's message, Gregory Cook aids our understanding of Nahum with historical background on its cultural references, literary allusions, and poetic devices, making this book a useful resource for pastors and Bible study leaders as well as laypeople.

Long awaited for: the gospel according to Nahum. Thank you!!
What a great text! The author does a wonderful job of unpacking this book of the Old Testament, going back to the original Hebrew and integrating other scholars' work, resulting in comprehensive and thoughtful exploration of Nahum. I hadn't the background to understand the literary allusions and poetic devices used in the text, and now feel I have a much increased understanding of this gospel.
Monumental Resource for an Often Forgotten Book of the Bible
I greatly appreciate how Severe Compassion was able to open my eyes to the book of Nahum, a book which previously I felt had only a single message (God's vengeance on Asyria) and of which I had little to no understanding of its purpose in the Canon. Through Cook's diligent research and teaching, I now see Nahum as a message of God's love for His sinful people and how He will stop at nothing to save us from our sin. I highly recommend Severe Compassion to everyone, no matter if it is for a personal study or as a teaching resource, Cook has filled the pages of this book with enough depth that a person may go back to it time and time again and obtain renewed and refreshed eyes and he has communicated Nahum's message is a such a way that a man as simple as myself can hear the Gospel preached throughout the book of Nahum for the first time ever and take comfort in God's Good News.
I highly recommend this book it is truly a wholesome read
Cook's book helped me understand a prophet I had not been able to comprehend previously. When reading the Old Testament, the book of Nahum had always been a sort of unknown ground. After reading Cook's commentary, I was enlightened as to the spiritual relevance in the book of Nahum. I highly recommend this book it is truly a wholesome read.
