Every mix has room for exactly so much sound: and most muddy mixes are muddy because everything'sfighting for the same space. My friend Josh Schmidt gave me a name for the fix I've been using for abouta decade: the Sonic Sandwich.

Cymbals and sibilance on top. Lead guitars and synths as the "onion" — flavor, not filling. Vocals as themeat, because that's usually what the whole mix needs to serve. Bass and rhythm section as the breadholding it all together. Once you can hear a mix in those layers, EQ stops being a mystery and startsbeing carpentry — you're just carving out room for what matters most.
