The people of God have always found themselves confronted by an empire. Empire is the name given to the spiritual and social nature of a nation that overtly and covertly pervades every area of life with a dominating narrative and conformity to it.
The Image of Empire
· Pergamum: A reflection of Rome on the eastern side of the empire.
· The city was renowned for its library, temples and the throne of Zeus overlooking the city.
The Image of Failed Witness
· To what power were they going to bear witness?
o Balaam led the people into a fatal accommodation with the daughters of Moab (Numbers 22-24).
Antipas: The Image of a Faithful Witness
· According to church tradition, Antipas was martyred during the reign of Nero by burning in a brazen bull-shaped altar for casting out demons worshiped by the local population.

Ephesus: First Love
Revelation 2:1-7
1 John 4:19 tells us we love God because He first loved us.
The Message to Ephesus
• A FIRST LOVE kind of experience with God initially
• Over the course of 30 years they lost their FIRST LOVE
Boundary Keeping became the expression of their faith
• Ephesus was one of the major centers of the emperor cult and the worship of Artemis
• In their zeal for purity, they lost the centrality of love
They became a community of ungenerous orthodoxy
• Orthodoxy without orthopathy is a deadly combination.
• John the Apostle makes clear in 1 John 4:12 the essence of being a Christian is not the believe in the right propositions but the right practice of love toward others.
John calls on them to remember, repent and redo what they did at the start.
If love cannot triumph over the spirit of boundary keeping, then Christ will remove their lampstand (i.e. their witness in the community that brought people to God in the beginning).
There is no love like the first love
