On the morning of Friday, September 29th, Ray and Rosanna Eggers woke to the sound of pounding rain in western North Carolina. The gentle stream that flowed near their mountain home had turned into a raging force of nature. Looking out the window, Ray's face grew tense. "We gotta go," he said firmly.
Grabbing a few essentials, they headed for the door, but by the time they stepped outside, the water was already knee-deep. The stream had become a flood. Scrambling to higher ground, they reached an elevated road and watched helplessly as the surging waters tore through their beloved home. Furniture, photographs, and keepsakes—all the memories built over a lifetime—were swept away in a matter of minutes.
When the floodwaters finally receded, Ray and Rosanna returned to what was left of their house. Mud covered every surface. The floors were warped and buckled, and the drywall had crumbled. It was devastation in every direction. Their hearts sank. Everything was gone.
In the aftermath, their first thought was to contact their children. But with cell phone service down, every call failed. Anxiety grew as they desperately tried to let their family know they were safe. Finally, after several agonizing hours, they made contact with their four daughters. Everyone was safe. But the reality remained—Ray and Rosanna's home was gone.
What followed in the weeks and months to come was a testimony to compassion and faith. Help began to arrive—sometimes from the most unexpected places. Strangers offered support. A generous family from Maryland donated a beautiful travel trailer, giving them a place to live. Cash donations poured in from people they had never met. Samaritan's Purse sent a team to help clear the debris from their property, cleaning and preparing the land where their home once stood.
The Shady Grove Family has been privileged to join in the love and support for Ray and Rosanna.
This story of heartbreak, resilience, and the overwhelming love of a community is the focus of today's episode of Shady Grove Radio. It’s a powerful reminder of how, even in the darkest moments, the hands and feet of Christ are present in the kindness and generosity of others.
